HD Radio Text Data

There’s quite a few stations across the country that have HD Radio implemented, but don’t have any text data, station logos or PTYs set. It’s nice to see this data, even if it’s only static and not dynamic.

My question…do HD Radio transmitters have the capability to at least have static text and display a station logo and PTY? Or is this an additional investment? I’m guessing dynamic data such as artist/title and album art would be an additional investment.

I’m curious if engineers/stations aren’t setting this due to lack of detail or for financial/other reasons?

A little of both. The current generation of HD equipment has all of that ability built in. If it's not all set, it's probably a combination of overworked engineer and lack of budget.

But there's still a LOT of first and second generation equipment on the air out there, and it can't necessarily do station logos and all that other good stuff without expensive upgrades.

Thanks for the quick reply! I appreciate it! 🙂

One of my local stations (KNUQ-HD)has proper metadata for it's analog feed's RDS. But when it started broadcasting HD Radio a few weeks ago, the metadata was never set up properly, the title, and artist field's just say "HD1, HD2, HD3, HD4" depending on the channel. Seems like they "configured" something, but not the metadata.

We use local internet radio for our HD2s and 3s. I wrote a little python script to grab their metadata and format it into an XML that's readable by PADapult, since there doesn't appear to be any good (cheap to free) software available for this. I couldn't get our managers interested in buying any software for this. If anyone wants to take a look at my garbage code I think I've posted it somewhere here. I might be the only one in the building who regularly listens to our HD stations

It's actually gotten worse. A lot of the major NYC and Philly FM stations use to send out their logo via HD Radio. Now very few of them do. And many don't show the album art of the currently playing song anymore, either. It seems like only Audacy is still taking HD Radio seriously, while iHeart just treats it as an afterthought.

Which NYC stations aren't sending logos? I was down there a week ago and pretty much everyone seemed to have them running.
