Would viewers in Marion, Grand Rapids and the other far-flung markets where WSNS was carried on cable even have been able to get decoders?)

WSNS was carried beyond Chicago mostly because of its White Sox coverage, and I'm thinking that ended when ONTV started?

The White Sox moved from WSNS to WFLD in 1982. They had previously carried the White Sox games until 1972, when the games moved mostly to WSNS, though a few were carried by WGN.

Seems like quite a mess with the sharing of channels thing.
Sharing of channels is always a mess. Back in the day, in Oregon, some cable systems there carried a mix of California stations on dedicated channels, and it even showed up in the TV Guide like that. It was kind of a variation on the theme of wild-card channels used to bring in locally pre-empted network shows from out of market.

Also, CBS got the shaft in most of Oregon (outside of Portland) as Eugene and Medford were both two station markets into the 1980s; KEZI and KOBI were primary ABC while KVAL and KTVL were primary NBC (incidentally, both KVAL and KTVL would switch to CBS around the time when the third station in each market came on the air)

The 1979 Television Factbook services volume shows Medford cable carrying KPIX San Francisco, KXTV Sacramento, and KOIN Portland, though is not clear whether any of these were full-time channels, or shared with another station. Eugene cable shows only KOIN.

I would hope that in the case of Medford, they allowed at least one CBS affiliate (probably KOIN) to be carried full-time.
