Lester Holt stepping down from "NBC Nightly News

Lester Holt, the anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” for a decade, announced Monday that he is stepping down from the long-running broadcast at the beginning of the summer.

Holt will continue to be a fixture at the network with a full-time role at “Dateline,” where he has been the principal anchor for almost 15 years, according to a memo shared with network staff Monday.

Combined with what's happening at CBS Evening News, one has to wonder about the future of this kind of thing.

Also wonder how the spin off of MSNBC figures into this. He was a regular there too at one time.

A lot of changes in these long form traditional linear TV shows.

True too given that CBS News is protecting their streaming news channel CBS News 24/7 and their local editions on the CBS News app.

NBC moved the "News" crews out of MSNBC to NBC News Now prior to the spinoff announcement. MSNBC is viewed as purely political talk at this point given where we are now. Note as mentioned in previous threads that MSNBC and CNBC would have to build a new news division given that they will no longer get access to NBC News.

And Tom Llamas from NBC News Now is named as one of the candidates to take the spot at NBC Nightly News given his role in sometimes filling in for Lester Holt. The other one is Hallie Jackson and her role for being the anchor at NBC News Now and as a fill-in on NBC Nighly News too. I can see NBC Nightly News emphasize their ties to NBC News Now given that we are in the mist of the spinoff.

NBC News has not selected a successor to Holt. Tom Llamas, who is the anchor of the evening newscast on streaming service NBC News Now, has been considered a leading candidate for the role.

Holt will be the second evening news anchor to step away from the job in recent months. Norah O’Donnell left the “CBS Evening News” in January after a five-year run.

While Holt’s exit is being presented as his decision, it’s likely NBC News management is looking to bring down the multimillion salary that has come with the job. Hoda Kotb, a favorite host at NBC’s “Today,” left in January after the network attempted to reduce her salary in a new deal.

How many folks under age 65 watch any of the network newscasts when you can have everything on demand now?
Very few.

For reference, in the early 1980s when there were only 3 channels for a majority of Americans, around 40% of households were watching one of the evening news shows. Last week that was 12%.

For the TV demos, in 18-49 the three shows combined for a 1.5 rating. In 25-54, the three shows combined for a 2.3 rating.
Remember that rating is out of all TV households, not just those who happen to be using the TV at 6:30 ET.

A lot of the big population centers accounting for plenty of people had more than three channels. Three major networks sure. No question. But there were still independents doing their “old sitcom rerun” thing such as they were.

I like Lester Holt all the best to him not surprised Lester is leaving Nightly News as the rumors started last year that he was leaving. I was surprised that Lester didn't leave Dateline when he took over Nightly News a decade ago.

It’s easy money for him. Read the script go home.
