And yes, in most cases the guardians charge a fee to air the games.
Erie PA is losing their Guardians affiliate as WRIE is one of the 20 or so stations Cumulus is pulling the plug on this weekend. One thing I noticed on the Cleveland Ind......ummm, Guardians broadcast on WTAM/WAKR is the ton of local business' advertising. So maybe WEOL has no sales people left to go out knocking on doors to get said local advertisers so they gave them up? I assume there's also some cost they may have to pay that may or may not be cheap to broadcast the Guardians games. I'm sure their pocketbook's a little lighter than, say, ihurtradio's. They may also be thinking "Hey, is anybody REALLY listening to us for the Tribe games?" when there's a couple of mega-wattage stations broadcasting the games covering a lot more area then they do.

That's not how it works. If Cumulus takes 1260 silent, until and unless there's an FCC filing window for new AM stations, nobody can come in and apply for a new 1260. And really, who would at this point? Building a new four-tower AM from scratch is easily a million-dollar proposition in 2025, for a station that will be worth maybe $100k the moment you sign it on.But they're holding on to the frequencies, just taking them silent [STA]. I guess they're so afraid of someone else coming in and latching onto the frequencies and making them wildly successful so they don't get embarrassed that they couldn't do it.
If this 1260 goes completely under, and the license is turned in, or otherwise leaves the air for good, could AM1260 "The Rock" in Cleveland possibly see some growth in coverage? That's not how it works. What Cumulus is doing is stemming its losses for now and waiting to see if someone will come along and offer anything at all for the silent licenses. They'll gladly sell if someone's willing to pay.
1260 is an extremely crowded channel and there's 1250s in Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne and 1270 in Detroit to contend with. I can't imagine a nonprofit-driven station would want to sink money into something that at best would throw a marginal lob into Ashtabula. If this 1260 goes completely under, and the license is turned in, or otherwise leaves the air for good, could AM1260 "The Rock" in Cleveland possibly see some growth in coverage?
Yes, aware of how it works. I was just throwing that out there as a "poke in the eye" so to speak for Cumulus. I was thinking along the same lines....there be no way in hell anybody that's not nuts in the head would buy/rebuild/etc. any AM station if a frequency opened up......well, maybe some religious group might because it's not actually THEIR money they're using. They'd keep going back to the well till eventually all the "followers" would say that's "it's time to stop throwing money at this nightmare because I can't afford this anymore"That's not how it works. I assume you’re referring to God’s money?well, maybe some religious group might because it's not actually THEIR money they're using.
WOBL has made mention of the Guardians games on billboards and their website/social media pages. This should be a boost to the station, while a blow to WEOL.Anyone else notice WEOL dropped the Guardians and WOBL picked them up?
Counterpoint: both WMMS and WTAM boom into Lorain County with ease. WEOL was basically superfluous for the Guards.WOBL has made mention of the Guardians games on billboards and their website/social media pages. This should be a boost to the station, while a blow to WEOL.
Who knows. Tim Alcorn was at WEOL forever. They also have had better success selling ads for the Ohio State games.I wouldn't be surprised if other teams end up leaving WEOL for WOBL or WDLW.
WARF 1350 The Gambler airs Spanish broadcasts of home games, and have done so since last season.Does any station broadcast Guardians games in Spanish? I know the Cavs had games broadcast in Spanish on LaMega at one time.
