The Spot

Now the Spot added a lot of classic rap music and more classic alternative. Anybody noticed this? I believe a format change is in the horizon.

Not having listened to the Spot in a long time, I can't say for certain, but that doesn't sound much different than what other classic hits stations are doing. I'm starting to hear songs on most Audacy classic hits stations that I played on Top-40 when they were new about 20-25 years ago. Those of us who were raised on mid-to-late 80's and 90's music are approaching 50 and on our way out of the money demo.

Not that a format change isn't a possible scenario, but it sounds to me more like the Spot is simply evolving. 98.7 has had the same format for roughly 40 years, but it's not really the same format. My parents, who listened to the old K-Luv, don't listen to classic hits today. My dad has been gone 15 years now, but my mother is still alive and well, and she prefers NPR and country now.

Audacy sibling KKHH 95-7 The Spot in Houston has made significant changes to its playlist in the last six months. I’ve been hearing a lot more of what could broadly be called 90s Grunge, as well as Classic Rap and Hip-hop. Seems most of the 80s New Wave has disappeared, though there are still a good number of tunes the station has played for a long time. Hearing less 70s as well, though The Beatles’ Come Together did pop up recently, a rare 60s item.

The Houston version of The Spot has seen its 6+ ratings plunge since all the changes started, but perhaps they are doing better in the target demos.

I don’t see a format flip for The Spot in Houston in the near future, at least not until an Audacy/Cumulus merger becomes a reality. That would add CHR KRBE to the Houston cluster, which might result in more tweaks or complete change for either KKHH or KHMX.

I’m not buying the “KRLD 1080 simulcast on FM” idea for KSPF. See the WBAP situation.

Likely the same thing in Houston. Run off the older listeners while recruiting younger demos. Still up in the air whether that plan will work.

What is the Spot trying to do? Doesn’t even sounds like Classic Hits, sounds more like JACK.
It sure ain't the K-LUV sound of yesteryear. I never thought I'd see the day that I could hear Eminem on 98.7, but lo and behold...

It's really just a format evolution, and it is inevitable. KLUV/KSPF has been doing oldies/classic hits for forty years -- and forty years ago, the "newest" music that they played was about twenty years old (ie, up through the mid-sixties). If you look at some of the music that they're adding now, the newer stuff is...about twenty years old. So it's the same thing that they've always done.

That said, as they move into musical eras where listenership was more fragmented, I'm not sure that it will be great for their ratings.

Just an evolution of the classic hits format to match liked songs to what is now in the 25-54 age group...

KSPF has lagged somewhat behind its corporate siblings in shifting forward.

Two years ago, sister KRTH Los Angeles added songs from Shaggy, Outkas, Linkin Park, Killers. At the same time, WCBS-FM NYC added songs from Puff Daddy, Usher, Destiny's Child, and Coolio. So, old R&B and alternative aren't new to other Audacy classic hits outlets.

What if the Spot starts playing Metallica on here?
Would be no different than the sister Spot in Houston, who has previously played Metallica's "Enter Sandman" and "Sad But True". Not sure if it still does.

So, what’s the newest music that 98.7 The Spot is playing? I just heard Adele - Rolling in the Deep, which is from 2011. So maybe nothing newer than 10 years?

They need to spread the music out and add more music instead of repeating the same song over and over again
They play as many songs as test with their core listeners. Radio stations have to play consensus songs, and not every song you like is going to be the same as the ones other listeners like. So the ones that some people dislike don't get played.

95.7 The Spot in Houston still plays those, along with “Nothing Else Matters”.
Has anyone noticed the deterioration in the blend, flow and selection of music on Houston's "Spot"? It was so good originally, and had a different flavor from anything nationally, but it lost it somewhere during the bankruptcy.

IMO the station declined in quality after the original PD Chase Murphy left in 2021, but they still continued to get good ratings for a few years as a worse version of what they were at the start. It's only until last July when they shifted the music to be more in line with other Adult Hits stations that they started to see a decline in ratings, and I can see why. Not sure at all who the station is supposed to appeal to.

New slogans for 98.7 The Spot?

“From the “ho” in Hotel California to Snoop and Dr. Dre’s hoes, we’ve got you covered! DFW’s 98.7 The Spot!”

I actually wonder how they’d do with classic hip hop - “98.7 JAMS”? Also, the RDS PTY is now “Classic Rock”.

Remember, the format and blend were created by our "brother moderator" Huff, who trained the staff and implemented the format. I'm not a follower of most American music other than country, but I really liked the station at the start.

Will they do anything about The Spot and the music they’re playing? Just the same repeating songs over and over again it’s very irritating.

Is that the only station your radio receives??? Most radios have other stations on them.

At one time, radio stations played the same 40 songs over and over again. They called it Top 40, and it was very popular.

Now stations could have 500 song playlists, like The Spot, and people complain about stations playing the same songs.
