Bygone Stations/Formats/DJs/Etc

What stations or formats that have gone by the wayside do you miss ?
I know WBCN and WFNX are at the top of everyone's lists, but I guess there's no way stations like those would succeed or come back in this environment and if they did they would be ultra sanitized versions of their old selves.
I know there are other subtle things we all miss.
Turning on Kiss 108 at 12 Noon every Saturday
The Open House Party with John Garabedian on Kiss on Saturday nights
WBZ 1030 AM playing Christmas music on location from Downtown Crossing
Maynard in the Morning on BZ, WBZ 1030 AM was a powerhouse in the 80s
WCOZ?
The old WZOU
The ill fated MIKE FM which I enjoyed its first year or so.
96.9 WTKK, a station that I think was taking a real chance in this market
But the one I miss the most if Eagle 93.7, the all 70s station from like 1993-1999. I loved it. The playlist was great.

Just my 2 cents. I know "remember when " is the lowest form of conversation but, it's Friday and I'm lonely and bored.

The old WVBF on 105.7. They were an AOR station, but they had top 40 jocks, as well as a very demented pack of jingles, which I may just want to dig out and post online. Ron Robin, Charlie Kendall, and Harvey Wharfield were some of the talent. That was in the early 70s.

And don't forget at 106.7 we had the automated top 40 known as WBZ-FM, with Clark Schmidt (sp.?) and "Captain Ken" Shelton.

I miss (not necessarily in any order):

WRKO from the late 60s under Bill Drake;

WHDH "Radio 85";

WEEI "Newsradio 59";

96.9 WTKK: Eagan and Braude, Michael Graham, Jay Severin;

Oldies 103.3 WODS;

105.7 WROR: The Loren and Wally Morning Show;

WBZ as a news station under Westinghouse and (later) CBS ownership (sorry, the 'BZ of today is of lower caliber);

WCRB 102.5 when they broadcast live concerts at night, followed by the news at 11:00 pm;

WBUR, WGBH playing music during the daytime;

WBOQ "North Shore 104.9";

Magic 106.7 before Entercom/Audacy screwed it up;

I remember all of these...
I remember when WEEI Newsradio 59 was a real news station.
I forget to mention RKO 68...Eddie Andelman's show 266-6868.

Is North Shore 104.9 not around anymore? I used to listen a lot because they had a lot of North Shore Centric programming on.

Is the station from Salem 1260 still around?

I believe 1260 is now WBIX and running Brazilian Portuguese. Salem's WEZE is now on 590.

North Shore 104.9 was sold and is now part of K-Love.

I think you're thinking of WESX 1230 from Salem. The station still exists but has moved to the WLYN tower in Lynn from its old site in Marblehead. It now broadcasts leased-time religious and ethnic programming.

And as I mentioned over in another post: WJIB "FM 97".

In the eighties, Jerry Williams ruled the WRKO airwaves with his feud with then-mayor Kevin White. Local comedian Steve Sweeney used to come on as a parody of White. Williams had previously worked at WBZ.

I remember a guy named Bob Melvin, who had a great radio voice, did the night time sports on EEI.
Bob Melvin did the Weekend edition of Sports Final on WEEI during the week he did sports and sold spots at WFEA in Manchester. He then moved to doing sports for UPI before they folded. He had a great voice a nice delivery and was a very nice guy. I worked as his producer for a short time

Dick Provo from WEEI-FM 103.3...."The station for groovy grownups"........in the very early 70s....
I remember some of the billboards they use to have when they were soft rock. Slogans like "The Eagles without the Turkeys" or "Lennon without the Lemons."

Remember Jerry's one-man crusade against the seat belt law? It sparked a referendum that got it repealed for a while -- the word "requires" was replaced by "suggests" on the "Welcome to Massachusetts" signs on the interstates -- but the legislature reinstated it.

I do remember that. He also had a running feud with then-Senate President Billy Bulger, whose brother was fugitive James "Whitey" Bulger.

And I think he was the one responsible for the "Duke Of Mass" (parody of "Duke Of Earl") tune when Governor Mike Dukakis was running for President.
