FCC's Geoffrey Starks To Resign

FCC Commissioner Geoffrey Starks, one of two dems on the commission, is expected to resign this spring:

Starks was put in a bad position last month when the FCC began an investigation into Comcast's DEI policies.

He doesn't want to sit in a minority position on the commission. This will give the president to nominate another person to the commission. It's supposed to be a dem. But it might be a dem in name only. The law requires the FCC to be bi-partisan, with a 3-2 split.

Thanks for the heads up. It'll be interesting to see who Mr. Trump names for the post, but like you, I think he's going to skirt the law here as well as everywhere (or nearly everywhere) else.

Following the announcement that Geoffrey Starks is leaving the FCC, we get indications that Nathan Simington is also planning to leave.

Simington has been silent about all the investigations Brendan Carr has begun. It seemed that he's not on board with anything the new chairman has done so far. My sense is we're about to see a far more activist FCC than we've ever seen before.

If both the Democrats on the FCC resign, is there anything that is going to force Trump to fill the two Democratic spots on the commission or can he just leave them open indefinitely?

The rules say there can be no more than three from any single party.

However he just fired the two dems on the FTC. No replacements have been named.

As you suggest, he could just leave them open. It would weaken any decisions they would make.

It's official. He resigned on Thursday. The president has to nominate a democrat, which probably won't happen.

Commissioner Anna Gomez, who becomes the lone Democrat on the FCC, said Starks’ exit and Republicans getting their majority will “change the dynamics” of how business gets done.

There's no law requiring five commissioners. As long as repubs have majority, they will do what they want. Having for commissioners saves money, and we know how that goes.
