Cousin Brucie's WABC Saturday Night Show Will Be Syndicated

Yup, exactly. The reverb and jingles are a big part of what makes the show so special...
WABC and WMCA were, in the '60s, finely-tuned chaos machines. The jocks were an element of the chaos, but only one element. The jingles, the plate reverb, the recorded promos (Dan Ingram's image voicers or the Good Guys' silly singalongs), even the live spot reads, all contributed to that sound. You're right, lose those elements and it's just another nostalgia show. And of course, with most nostalgia, it doesn't mean very much if you weren't there yourself.

Interestingly, I wasn't there myself - I'm 23. So it's not firsthand nostalgia that makes me enjoy Brucie's show. By the time my parents were ten, Brucie was already off the air from WABC.

It's just a wonderful experience, plain and simple. Magical. Yes, I'm a bit of an old soul, so in that sense I find it nostalgic. But I'm not tuning in to Brucie to relive the days of my childhood or coming of age or whatever.

As we've noted, those elements are a big part of what made that top-40 format click. Even the pre-recorded commercials were often fun and entertaining. That kind of radio wasn't really just "music radio." It was personality driven, but not just a personality dropping a voice track in once or twice an hour. No, at its best, it was a highly skilled jock putting on a "show" for the listening audience. That's part of what makes Brucie so special! Is it about the music? Absolutely. Is it about much, much more than the music? Absolutely.
