Pre-Broadcast Rituals: Getting in the "Zone" Before Going Live on the Mic

What does it take to get in the mood—the moment just before you switch on the million-dollar microphone and begin broadcasting to the audience?

A neighbor of mine would tap into a physical expression of his deep emotional connection to the music in those moments. He was intense, with jerky hand and body movements, and his pained facial expressions conveyed the raw energy he felt.

Rick Shaw (Dallas, SF, etc.) was and in keeping with his "beat" orientation, he would simulate with a pencil, acting as though he was drumming, just before turning on the Mic.
