WLW's Mike McConnell announces retirement

Good for him going out on his terms. (I assume.) I remember him filling that 10-2 slot for ages, leading right into Gary Burbank. Eventually Bill Cunningham took over 2-3 in addition to his evening slot.
Going to be interesting to see who they pick. Longtime Cincinnati media writer John Kiesewetter speculated Thom Brennaman could be the pick.

He said in his brief announcement that he had decided when he signed his last contract 3 years ago this would probably be it, and he informed management about a year ago. I guess he didn't want to go public early and have a long, drawn out farewell. Steve Hawkins has been the designated fill in, but I've got no idea who would be a permanent replacement. Now it's time for Cunningham. (edit: per the article Cunningham is staying until the end of Trump's term)

Didn’t see this coming and am sorry to hear it. I’ve always appreciated Mike’s blunt common sense take on things. I remember listening to him on WVUD, WTUE, and WSKS 96 ROCK. Wasn’t sure at first about his transition to talk radio but eventually he seemed to become more acclimated to it.

WLW has hopefully been planning for this and has someone in mind to replace Mike. John Kieswetter’s speculation about Thom Brennaman seems a little out there, but who knows.

Someone is going to have to walk in the footsteps of both Jim Scott and Mike McConnell. That's not an enviable task.

Willie once said he'd retire upon WLW's 100th birthday in 2022. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if they wind up having to pry the microphone from his cold, dead hands.

I swear Cunningham said yesterday that an announcement re McConnell's successor would be made today. Maybe it hasn't been made yet, but thought it might be during the morning show. Haven't seen any news anywhere.

I just heard a promo with Scott Sloan saying he is going to be the new morning host.

It's April 1. Let's wait til tomorrow.
Haha, I only remembered what day it was after I started driving so I couldn't edit the post. At first blush Scott Sloan makes sense but I think he likes what he's doing now just fine.

I think it's a good pick. Thom has done a solid job filling in weeknights when I've heard him regardless of whether he's talking sports.

In a funny way, the fact that his Nick Castellanos statement grew into being a popular/ongoing meme on social media (Search "Nick Castellanos Home Run" on Twiter/X) hence making Thom Brennaman remain relevant to many even with his abscence before coming back, played a part into him getting this second chance along with his willingness to learn from it. Who knows, maybe it could lead him to a second chance (if only on a fill-in basis) to call Reds games on the radio.
