Re: Most Inexplicable Network Program Pre-Emption
I can't vouch for Nashville, but it's true that WTMJ pre-empted Johnny Carson during much of the 1980s. This was at a time, IIRC, when Johnny was regarded as starting to skew old and some NBC stations thought they'd do better running something else to attract a younger audience. In WTMJ's case, it was off-network reruns ranging from Soap to Trapper John MD to Magnum PI. This started around 1982 or 1983 and lasted until WTMJ decided to bring back Johnny in September 1989. Milwaukee wasn't without Johnny, though: then-independent WVTV picked up The Tonight Show during the time WTMJ didn't have it.
Re: Most Inexplicable Network Program Pre-Emption
Matlock has always been a staple on WXYZ (ABC) Channel 7 in Detroit. They have long pre-empted ABC prime-time programming to run it, especially on weekends. Over in Erie, PA, pre-emptions for infomercials on weekend mornings have always been common on WICU (NBC) Channel 12 and WJET (ABC) Channel 24.
I have heard that WVNY (ABC) Channel 22 in Burlington, VT has long pre-empted various ABC programming - General Hospital was not seen on WVNY in the late 80s, and ABC's Friday night programming was not seen either. In 1987, it replaced I Married Dora with Sea Hunt. Into The Night Starring Rick Dees and other ABC shows were replaced by infomercials in the early 90s, and more recently, Kimmel Live was replaced by infomercials.
Pre-emptions are almost unheard of in Canada nowadays, unless it's a regular basis issue such as with CBET 9 in Windsor with its position in the Detroit market. Some CBC shows are not shown on some CBC affiliates, although usually it is the least lucritive programming that isn't shown. Also, in the 70s and 80s, many CBC affiliates showed morning and afternoon CBC programming at different times than the O&O stations - it was not uncommon to see Mr. Dressup at (I'm making these up) 10:00 on CBLT, 9:00 on CFPL, and 11:30 on CKWS. CBC's Midday was shown at 2 PM on CFPL, instead of at noon.
CFCF 12 in Montreal and BCTV often pre-empted CTV for local stuff back in the 90s. CTV bought CFCF, and established its own station on Channel 32 to compete with BCTV which in turn moved to Global.
Re: Most Inexplicable Network Program Pre-Emption
I know in the mid-90s KWTV-9-Oklahoma City would push "The Price Is Right" to the 11am hour for "The Donnie and Marie" talk show. Young and the Restless would air at 4:00pm against Oprah. KWTV was interesting in that in the early years of online streaming, they threw up their entire signal to the internet. I was an office drone at the time and would watch TPiR on my lunch hour.
Some other stations that I can think of that would push Young and the Restless to the 4:00 hour was Belo's KMOV-4-St Louis. I don't know if they still air Y&R in that hour.
"Match Game 90" almost never aired on most ABC affiliates because they had midday newscasts. In Atlanta, it was punted over to WUPA-69 which ran it with the John Davidson-hosted "$100,000 Pyramid" in the early afternoon.
WTVW-7 (then ABC, now Fox) in Evansville would air "Ryans Hope" in the early 80s in the 9:30am slot (probably delayed 1-day) so they could air their midday newscast. Very fuzzy recollections of it, but I'm pretty sure their line was this:
9:00 Richard Simmons
9:30 Ryan's Hope
10:00 Love Boat/Fantasy Island
11:00 Family Feud (network)
11:30 News
11:45 Midday Farm Report (don't know if this was the actual name, I do remember some big guy in overalls standing behind feed barrels reading the grain and livestock prices).
Re: Most Inexplicable Network Program Pre-Emption
In Memphis WMC NBC 5 used to pre-empt Notre Dame football on NBC for the SEC syndicated package when there was a time conflict. That's one case where I really didn't mind it because I'd usually rather see the SEC game. They'd show the ND game when there wasn't a conflict with the SEC game. They did this until recent years when the SEC package moved to WLMT 30.
Re: Most Inexplicable Network Program Pre-Emption
As part of Merv's severance agreement with NBC (to end the 1962-63 daytime talk show), he was allowed to create and produce shows for the network; the first, which he hosted, was "Word For Word" (1963-64); the second was "Jeopardy!".
Merv was also one of three hosts of the primetime game show "Keep Talking" (1958-60); Carl Reiner and Monty Hall also hosted that show.
Nationally Televised Network Sporting Events that were Pre-empted in your market
My reply to the "Most Inexplicable Network Preemption" thread in light of the Duke-UNC game on CBS bumped in my neighboring Peoria/Bloomington market (WMBD-31) due to the Easter Seals telethon got me thinking.
Any other notable instances--other than the usual Labor Day tradition in many markets of the US Open on CBS or NBC's golf coverage bumped in favor of the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon--where a major nationally-televised sporting event was preempted in favor of local programming in your markets of interest?
I know of a few other earlier examples involving Peoria stations (since I grew up within that market--plus also within Grade A/B range of the neighboring Quad Cities IA/IL DMA):
--In 1986, one of the seasons where Peoria's Bradley University won the Missouri Valley Conference and was going to The Dance, Easter Seals telethon coverage (IMO back in the days where it seemed like it was just as much of a big deal as Jerry's telethon on Labor Day) concluded on Selection Sunday--and the CBS NCAA selection show was scheduled before the telethon was slated to end. The CBS Selection Show that year was farmed out to NBC affiliate WEEK-25 (who carried many of the Bradley men's games locally)--and IMO if Bradley had not made the tourney that year the Selection Show probably would have went unseen in Peoria due to the Easter Seals telethon.
--The 1999 Army/Navy game coverage on CBS was also bumped by WMBD in favor of a Division I-AA (now Football Championship Series) playoff game involving Illinois State University in Normal, IL (the twin city of Bloomington).
--In the late '90s, back when ABC usually had Saturday college football doubleheaders weekly (IIRC), many times Peoria ABC affiliate WHOI-19 bumped the 11AM game in favor of ESPN Plus coverage of Big Ten games.
Any other major sporting event preemptions in your local markets? IIRC I have heard of some instances in parts of the country where the likes of NASCAR races were bumped in certain markets due to the likes of telethons, etc.
The proof in the pudding for Duke-UNC not playing in Peoria tonight is the Easter Seals telethon link on WMBD's website:

Also a thread on one of the message boards sponsored by the Peoria Journal-Star alluded to tonight's preemption:

Re: Do your station still pre-empts network shows for local sports?
On now-defunct Guiding Light, Sacramento's then-CBS affiliate KXTV (now ABC) dropped it in 1992, and when KXTV and KOVR swapped in 1995, KOVR refused to do the same thing and even as a CBS O&O. Pretty uncommon for a network O&O station not clearing a show broadcast by their network. Fox's Weekend Marketplace, different story.
Congress, the NAB, and the FCC screwed us on the SHVERA and later STELA laws on distant network feeds. It would be nice if they let us watch network programming (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX from NYC East/LA West) on like DirecTV for example on satellite incase of a local station pre-empts it for local or nonsense stuff. But never happen to satellite subs.
Network shows killed by pre-emptions.
Do you guys know of any shows that aired on the networks primetime/daytime that were cancelled/killed do to too many affiliates pre-empting the show for their own fare? IMO this is probably what killed network daytime game shows in the 90's like Caesars Challenge. This is why I hate WTLV in Jacksonville pre-empting Caesars Challenge for Montel Williams, and didn't get to watch Caesars Challenge until it was re-run on the USA network and other NBC game shows of the 90's that I never got to watch until some of it's episodes were uploaded on YouTube. Obviously the Jacksonville TV market loves pre-empting network daytime shows.
The 1990 Match Game got preempted in many markets as I recall. (The noon "death slot"!)
