Salem Deals With DjTj

This story caught my attention. Salem has made a deal with the son of the president and his wife:

As part of the deal with Trump Jr., Salem will acquire a 30% stake in his Conservative news aggregator MxM News and entered into a long-term services agreement under which Mr. Trump Jr. and Salem “will work together to develop a series of high-impact promotional and growth initiatives”. Salem says Trump Jr. becomes a key stakeholder of Salem and a strategic force behind its future.

Wasn't there another president whose son did business deals capitalizing on his father's name?

To answer your last question first, I keep thinking of Billy Bush and his involvement with a beer outfit, though I may be wrong.

Back to the article. Salem has been loyal to Trump since he took office in 2017. The company went so far as to fire some of its talk show hosts (I think Mike Gallagher was one) who wouldn't tow the pro-Trump line back then.

This is an interesting move for Salem as the company had sold several of its Christian contemporary stations (Portland, Oregon, and Athens, Georgia, to name two) to other Christian outlets late last year and early this year. I would expect to hear even more Donald Trump propaganda after these moves.

I wasn't familiar with the MXM news service in the OP. I took a look and it requires a paid subscription to read the stories. Which I find unusual given they're described as a news aggregator.

"Wasn't there another president whose son did business deals capitalizing on his father's name?"

Hunter Biden, but DJT, Jr's deal probably won't need a presidential pardon.

Lara is married to Eric, not Don Jr. Don Jr. was dating Kimberly Gilfoyle, not sure the current status of that

Don't you mean Billy Carter and his Billy Beer from the late '70s? That deal put Falls City out of business, and didn't help the other contract brewers (F.X. Matt, Cold Spring) any, either.

Another highlight from the RadioInsight article in the OP:

"Donald Trump Jr. and Lara Trump aren’t just becoming business partners with Salem, they now also have significant ownership stakes in the company with a major incentive to grow shareholder value which in turn will drive the stock price. It’s definitely an exciting time to be a Salem shareholder.”

So to review, we have political operatives who now have a "significant ownership stake" in a group that owns 95 radio stations. Sound familiar? I wonder if there will be as much FCC scrutiny of this deal as there was of the Audacy deal. I bet not.

Think a certain FCC chairman will be launching investigations of Salem the way he's trying to do with a certain pair of public broadcasters? Methinks this has way more potential to harm the republic than whether the aforementioned "pubcasters" are stretching the definition of underwriting credits, much less whether a word sneaks into a news report that could, might, possibly have some scent of bias.

I was thinking Philippine politics at first where the current Vice President of that country just got impeached for doing questionable deals, corruption allegations and Capitalizing on her father's name who was the former President of the Philippines and is currently sent to the Hague for Crimes against humanity type stuff here. Yes we are taking about a Father and daughter political duo facing two high profile trials in the country.

But back to Salem Specifically one of their pundits Hugh Hewitt joins Fox News.

Salem Radio's Hugh Hewitt joins Fox News as contributor

And back to the OP this Salem Deal with Trump should have never happened given that we run into the conflicts of interest part and also if Salem wanted a deal they needed somebody not from the Trump Administration. If the FCC wasn't run by Brendan Carr then one of Salems affiliates like KRLA Los Angeles would have their license questioned over the conflict of interest issue.

Don Jr. and Kimberly split late last year.
Yes, and Kimberly's "parting gift" -- or in days of yore, her "consolation prize" -- is getting appointed to be ambassador to Greece.

BTW, for anyone who's unaware, before Ms. Guilfoyle and Junior became an item, she had been married to none other than Gavin Newsom, former mayor of San Francisco and current governor of California.

(Man, Gavin lives a charmed life. He dodged a howitzer shell-sized bullet there. Kimmy and DJTJ were a pair made in ... a toxic waste factory.)

It was actually Michael Medved, who continues to be a never Trumper. He was on a station in Seattle, but is now apparently just on the web. I have often wondered why he couldn't have formed the nucleus of a syndicator serving what have to be a lot of disaffected Reaganites, both Republican and now especially Democrats. That audience ought to be decently sizable, and there are a lot of stations needing programming instead of being the third sports talker in town.

Thanks for the correction. As I said above, my memory gets fuzzy sometimes...

It wasn't Medved. It was Joe Walsh, a former (on-term) congressman from Illinois who hosted at WIND in Chicago and then went national on Salem's network. Walsh was a Tea Party Republican who supported Trump originally, but then switched gears and openly criticized him on-air, which led Salem to cut him loose. I don't remember whether it happened before or after Walsh announced his campaign to primary Trump in 2020.

It's true that Michael Medved didn't go all-in with Trump in 2016-17 and never wavered. That, along with his health issues, led to him parting ways with Salem amicably (his contract wasn't renewed). You can even say Salem gently pushed him out because he didn't fly the MAGA flag. Either way, they got someone in Sebastian Gorka who sang the corporate song to take over Medved's time slot. The irony is that Gorka's successor, Hugh Hewitt, was slow to embrace Trump a decade ago. Then Hewitt slowly started to "come around", perhaps to maintain his standing with the company.

How could this even work and be given air time? There are only 24 hours per day. I mean, how many hours are already used for infomercials disguised as "medical reports" detailing that amazing new discovery of how the nose mucous of pink rebbits only found in a one square mile section of Greenland which will cure diabetes and cancer and you can get a free sample, just pay shipping (so we can capture your card info and put you on monthly billing) or the PI spots from those highly known advertisers, known to attorneys, the courts, those defrauded with rhe phone number repeated 6, 7 or 8 times? Yes, Salem is such a good Christian chain demonstrating only the best in honesty, integrity and truthfulness!
