March 2025 Orlando 6+ PPMs

Nothing earth shattering this month.

  • Star holds at # 1 but is down 9.8-8.5
  • WMMO climbs to # 2, 6.7-7.1
  • Sunny drops to # 3, down 7.2-6.7, and is down 11.7-6.7 in the last six months.
  • XL falls 8.8-6.7 but continues to be one of the strongest CHRs in the Top 50
  • Magic falls to # 6, 6.7-6.1
  • Mix is on a steady upswing 3.8-4.1-4.5
  • 96.5 boomerangs 3.1-1.5-3.6
  • 102 Jamz has yet to have a book where they go up in the 6+ numbers since launching
  • Pride Radio (WXXL-HD2) continues to impress for an HD2 that is not on a translator with a 0.6

Why are Sunny ratings declining? Is it because or in spite of the morning show? Have there been significant music shifts, or is this an annual pattern? Could Hits 96.5 be taking some of their audience? They did also change their jingles and imaging voice in December, but I don't know how much of an impact that would have. For what it's worth, I was just on vacation in Orlando (I live in the Philly area), and heard both WMMO and Hits 96.5 in public a few times but never Sunny.

Sunny is tough to depend on as background/office noise because of the morning show. Some of the liners with the new voice guy are political as well. I also have seen them be quite hostile on social media. They are trying to make angry conservative politics their identity as much as possible, which is an unusual choice for a mainstream music format.

Yeah, my hunch was that while the morning show might have a big audience, it's probably also turning off a lot of potential listeners (and office/stores/etc.) from their music programming the rest of the day. Especially if this type of content is working its way into the imaging (and I know they run promos for the morning show that don't beat around the bush about the content as well). I listened to the James Steele in the afternoon once a few months back, and heard him comment on some political news as well - considering he's also APD, maybe he's enabling this approach? I think someone at corporate needs to rein them in a little. The "build a station around a polarizing morning show" approach may have worked on Alt/Rock stations that ran Howard Stern back in the day, but maybe not so much for a Classic Hits station in the PPM era.

For a long time WOCL's seemed to defy logic with that highly political morning show.

Could it be that people who share those particular opinions are tired of hearing that type of talk and just want to hear music and non-political banter?

It must get exhausting after a while.

WMMO, WOEX and WMGF play a lot of similar music and won't get your blood boiling.

It's to the point I don't even listen to the jockless weekends on Sunny anymore. The once (or twice) an hour morning show promos are just as polarizing as the show itself.

I can confirm that I have tuned out & listened to Sunny much less, because of the morning show promos playing one-sided political clips or shocking jokes before they go to commercials. I can't even watch those nightly TV shows anymore without my "blood boiling".
Radio is lacking simple "dad jokes" nowadays.

Don't say that to Rick Stacy. He'll send you a nasty email or call you out on air saying he doesn't care who listens or doesn't listen and doesn't want you to listen anyway.
