April ratings are here

We all know KOVE is enjoying a change in the panel but once the bubble pops KROI will be the number one Spanish station in the Market. I am sure David can see the morning numbers and has to admit that RB still has juice in this market.

KOVE with a 4.2, thats awesome.
The regional mexicans all within 3.5 and 3.3, only 0.2 difference and still need more time. Its pretty much a tie in this demo.
As for KLTN , 2.5 to 3.3 , a 0.8 gain, they are doing great.

The panel changes around 6% each month. In the summer and around Christmas it can be higher. But it is always refreshing itself. Always. The panel changes for two rea#ons: either the household reaches the 24 month limit or they drop out due to noncompliance (not carrying the meter by one or more members of the dwelling unit).

There is no “bubble” as the panel is always refreshing, just as it has donde since 2005.

The Raúl numbers are all older.

What is going on with KAMA?
And KLOL. The two contemporary stations that don't do a regional Mexican format of any kind are both way off from their past performance.

KLOL is way on top of KAMA. So I also ask, what’s going on with KAMA?
But KLOL is way, way below its former levels. First, they let go a very good PD, and now the whole pop format has collapsed. KAMA is on somewhat limited facilities after a plane crash took out their tower.

May have to do with reduced signal due to the plane crash into their tower.

KAMA has applied for a new aux site atop the Chase tower downtown that will duplicate the coverage of the destroyed primary facility. I suspect that new aux site may very well be redesignated as the primary.

The 104.9 signal from the current aux site seems okay in Harris County, though it seems weaker in some of the outlying areas.

Is there an issue with the specific Tu Musica format, or is it part of a possible broader decline of the genre?

The genre seems to be in a lull. But if you look, KLOL is closer to a Hot AC while KAMA is more CHR-ish.

I see too many variables that are not rated to the music in Houston. First, the ongoing inability of Nielsen to get the ratings certified by the MRC. Second, the loss of coverage by the UVN stations. Third, the new SBS station.

While Harris County is where a higher percentage of Hispanics live, the market is huge and loss of the other country coverage is very significant.

KAMA Has been falling behind for years now.. You have talents that just don't connect. When was the last time you heard a successful Cuban on the air in Houston? Morning show out of Miami.. Just too many things wrong with that station.

Too soon for me to say i told you so?
SBS is happy with La Ley, given this quote from their just released quarterly report (via Radio Insight):

“During 2024 we also acquired KROI-FM in Houston, our first radio outlet in the third largest U.S. Hispanic market, which has already successfully catapulted to first place among all Latino competitors in less than 90 days with the introduction of our newest SBS star host and iconic morning-drive jock, Raúl Brindis.”

The morning talents are actually Colombian, Argentine and Venezuelan, though.

Then again, iHeart has programmed Enrique Santos on CHR stations even west of the Mississippi and hasn't changed him in all this time.

Does it matter that the talent isn't Mexican when the music that accompanies it isn't either, and there's lots of options that are within the same company?

I've had Enrique in other markets where nothing happens, and he has no impact in the market. Hard to get rid of his show when he is the one in charge of the spanish stations.

He’s kinda entertaining though, I remember him being in Houston for a while on one of those translators. I think he was in LA CALLE.

But yeah I think that’s part of the same reason MEGA TV didn’t catch on here in Houston either.

Demo rankings: RADIO RATINGS ROUNDUP, April 2025, Part II | Research Director, Inc.

KROI is #6 18-49, the primary sales demo for minority targeted stations. Not sure if the quote claiming KROI is in first place was merely referring to morning drive, as KOVE-FM is #1 among Spanish language stations as they finished in a tie for #4 18-49 with KQBT, but clearly KROI is doing very well. Will be very interesting to see if they continue to rise, or if this rise in listening is merely out of curiosity/the novelty of having Raul back on the air and they eventually fall back to earth.

Other thoughts:

KBXX down a bit, but overall both Hip Hop/R&B stations still doing very well, I definitely think they're benefitting from the 3 minute rule.

Inversely, neither KHMX or KRBE are doing particularly hot, despite the 3 minute rule helping pop stations elsewhere. If I had to guess, I'd figure that the appetite for pop music is smaller and the appetite for rhythmic music larger in a market that probably isn't even 30% non-Hispanic white in the sales demos.

KKHH up a bit now that they've increased the percentage of spins for '80s tracks back up. Still sounds like a shell of the station they once were, but seems like the small tweak was enough to get them back to a 4 share.

Interesting to see KLTN also with a nice jump in the same book KROI has their own big jump. KTJM and KQQK doing very well also. I'd assume there's still issues with the Hispanic sample, but I'm not sure there's room for 4 Regional Mexican stations in the market long term.

KLOL is way on top of KAMA. So I also ask, what’s going on with KAMA?
The drop at KAMA-FM coincides with the rise of KQBT, listeners possibly going to The Beat?
