After being dominant for quite some time, The Lake seems to have fizzled. Their music seems to be more classic hits-centric than other variety hits stations. WKQC, even with a unique blend of classic hits, has been thriving since Christmas music. The halo effect for WKQC typically had worn off by the end of the first quarter. WXRC, while doing well 6+, must be a bit heavy in older demos since it’s not placing in any of the demos reported above.

Not a good idea when two other stations are classic hits.

What is needed now is a real mainstream AC.

There's a couple of reasons. One is the new 3 minute rule. It has helped AC, Hot AC, Top 40, etc formats with high cume and low TSL. There has also been some PD and morning show changes, and that has caused the audience to shift around a little bit.

Mainstream AC hasn’t evolved much in the past 5 years. If you listen to any of the major market AC stations, despite each being slightly different, it’s still mainly the ‘80s to now blend with the ‘90s being the least represented decade.

It is surprising Charlotte doesn’t have an AC. WKQC was mainstream AC for years, even causing WLYT to flip to The Lake. I guess research showed the classic hits lane would be more lucrative?

I thought Mix 107.9 may attempt to be a “bright AC” to bridge the gap, but they look to be comfortable as a Hot AC.
