Echostar the company best known for Dish Network is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

June 6 (Reuters) - EchoStar (SATS.O) is considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing as the telecommunications services firm vies to shield its cache of wireless spectrum licenses from the threat of revocation by federal regulators, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
 
Lost in the history of Echostar is that Charlie Ergen started out selling the big dishes that became popular in the early years of cable networks popping up left and right. In fact, in addition to supplying local dealers nationwide, he created a "secret" direct-to-consumer company called DBS Satellite Services in 1982. It was located less than a mile from my home in Ventura, California (just up the 101 one hour from L.A.) and he spun it off to two of its employees a couple of years after its start. DBS lasted well into the 1990s before being overwhelmed by the direct-to-home services marketed by DirecTV and -- surprise! -- Dish Network.
 
This has as much to do with Boost Mobile as it does with the Dish satellite offerings. Both have been bleeding customers.

The launch of the “new fourth national mobile carrier” had been horribly handled. They should have gone with fresh branding across the board (different names for prepaid and postpaid) and retired the Boost moniker, which has a rather cheesy reputation. Learn from what T-Mobile did to grab market share.

I see ads and promotions for the “big three” mobile carriers all the time. What has EchoStar been doing? Rare to see any type of promotion for them.
