More Music, More Variety on WLIT?

I just noticed this on Lite FM's social media. Usually, they would have "Chicago's Relaxing Favorites" as their social media bio but now they switched to "More music, more variety".

Is this a sign of something or do we take it as a grain of salt? Their website still says Relaxing Favorites and their playlist still looks Soft AC with a lack of currents, but do we see WLIT shifting towards Mainstream AC?

WLIT usually does okay but they fail to be dominant outside of the holiday season - to the point where they’ve been debuting the holiday music earlier and earlier each year, using it as a crutch. Something may need to change and they could be slowly tilting towards Mainsteam AC or even Hot AC to take direct aim at WTMX/The Mix.

Their website now says “More music, more variety” as well.

Back when the station was MyFM, Hot AC didn't work out for them.

Everything has changed except for their playlist. Although, there's five current-recurrent songs I've seen on their playlist. I've seen them play Beautiful Things, Dear Me, Die With A Smile, Flowers, and Lose Control. They're either testing those songs out or they're just adding on and keeping their format.

Interesting observation. I wonder why. It seems to me that the Mix is going more in the direction of MIX, as they to, are referring to themselves as ”Today’s Variety”.

Whatever Sunny in Houston is and continues to do, everyone should follow suit.

I suppose 'relaxing' is considered subjective
That's true. This is relaxing music to me.

But I think older listeners are getting the hint that they shouldn't get too attached to anything on the radio. That nice station playing Fleetwood Mac and Phil Collins oldies today will likely become the next station playing that Sabrina Carpenter racket tomorrow.

Don't know if that's good for a business without much of a younger audience either. But we'll see...

I just listened to WLIT and they played "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz, which when it came out in 2010, was the epitome of "loud kid's stuff that AC doesn't play"... but now it's 15 years later and those kids are grown up with jobs.

For additional context, it was followed up by Donna Lewis's "I Love You Always Forever". Very strange transition!

They seem to be in a transition phase at the moment. "Baby Baby," "Don't Know Much" and "The Power of Love" (Celine's) are still being played, but so are "Hips Don't Lie," "Sexyback," "This Is How We Do It," and "Hollaback Girl." Gloria Estefan, Michael Bolton, Bette Midler and other artists they were playing a few years ago are gone. I'd say they're pretty much your standard '80s-to-now AC, just with a gold selection that's a tad softer than the norm.
I'll still take it over their sister station in Detroit, which, speaking of bizarre gold choices, plays "ABCDEFU" by Gayle. 🤮

If you want actual Relaxing music, try out the Sunny Radio station on iHeart.

Going back to this, but I’m assuming they’re leaning towards Gold AC?

I would expect them to shift towards Mainstream AC after Christmas but it doesn’t look like to be the case here.

Dynamite was always played on AC I think. That was the period of time when a lot of those kind of songs started crossing over.
