Alaska How public radio serves rural Alaska

This is a perfect example of why KSKO so vital to the region we serve and that we fight to keep the Corporation For Public Broadcasting and the funding they provide.

I'll tell you why and give you an example.

Floods due to break up when rivers thaw and start moving as well as wildfires can be devastating to communities.

KSKO broadcasts info on both events as we get into the thick of each respective season and wildfire season kicked off a few weeks ago and we now have our first sizeable one in the KSKO listening area.

We broadcast updates multiple times a day on wildfire locations, sizes, locations respective to various communities, what'[s being done to fight them, etc.. even nights and weekends.

Here'[s some audio...I just recorded an update at home, zipped it over to the automation at the station and placed it in the automation playlist several times for tonight.

I have it set to play a news sounder for almost 20 seconds, to catch peoples ear that something important is about to be said followed by a news intro. This is especially handy when doing these things during times when local programming isnt expected.. it kind of trains ears to peak up and realize something is going on.. alot of people have the radio on all the time but may not always pay attention too closely if they aren't expecting something of interest to be airing.

Paul, I assume you also air announcements that urge listeners to take action at Protect My Public Media. Do you have an air check of that?

I don't...... we take a little softer, more personal approach and roll it into membership drive which is going on now.
