Vancouver radio station abruptly changes formats

It's a throwback in more than one way.

"Where once there were alternative and modern rock songs, there are now pop throwbacks, as Rogers Radio launched KiSS Throwback in Vancouver on June 19, 2025. Prior to broadcasting as Sonic, 104.9 FM in Vancouver was the home pop station KiSS Radio."

It seems like the Sonic format was toast no matter what, but I am not sure this move will really move the needle very much. The alternative rock format is relinquished entirely to CFOX and The Peak to battle over, and instead Rogers is going to compete in the tight CHR market. Even if the new incarnation of Kiss radio is focused more on Hot AC, Z95.3 already features music from the 90's through now (so it's not as if 104.9 is completely alone in the market).

Sonic was a well done station the times I heard it.

If Toronto didn't already have an Indie 88 and an Edge 102, I don't doubt that Kiss 92 would have tried going up against Edge with a Sonic 92. No need to though when there's already two stations battling it out as is.
