Buffalo Buffalo May trends

Disclaimers: Per RadioInsight.com . 12+ only. And just the top 5 shown. Notes as needed and discussion welcome. So....

1. WBLK/93.7 10.7(up .8)
2. WYRK/106.5 8.7(up .6)
3. WGRF/96.9 8.1(down .1)
4. WBEN/930 7.3(up .7)
5. WHTT/104.1 6.3(down .1)

Also of note: WBKV/102.5 drops .3 to 1.8 . I should also add that billboards for the station are starting to show up in the area; one on the 33 says "Find faith/Find hope" and an electronic billboard says "K-Love on/World off".

Other than that, it's your usual oscillations.

It appears to be pretty much seasonal "business as usual." WBEN's bump is statistically relevant. Talking to fans of the station, I get the sense that there's some unease with their ongoing transitions. Perhaps listening is up as people try to figure out who or what's happening next.

WBFO and WNED-FM both continue a downward trend. Is it formatics, or the incessant messages about funding? They focus on funding, not ratings, so it'll be a long time before we know how funding is going. Ratings appear to be slipping, however.

Nationally, this was a good month for News/Talk. WBEN did nothing different this month than they did last month, so again, it’s all about who gets the diaries

That’s a pretty steep dove from the top station at 10.7 to the 5th station at 6.3 . As you know most major stations seem to be from the 1 share if you consider “wolf” major, thru 5 share.

It’s funny for me know to see WUSW at 0.4. Our WECK simulcast began June 1. I don’t expect any bump at all, but I will just be curious to see. You can’t “fall off the floor”

WGRF, because of its brand only, is still a powerhouse and always will be. It’s an institution in Buffalo, not a radio station. Because of that, you could put a baboon on the air and the ratings will always be great. If you notice, at least the top 4 are brand institutions in Buffalo. No other new or current station will replace that brand heritage to get those numbers.

WBLK pretty much has a large audience segment to itself, as does WYRK. Rock formats in general have a lot more competition and/or P2/P3 listening. WKSE has evolved into more pop and less CHR thanks to its syndicated and aging VT shows. They're steady mostly because the "new" WTSS seems like it's nobody's P1 station. Of course, these are 12+ numbers. I'm sure that the demos tell a different story.

With all listening times being so short, there is often little difference between P1, P2 and P3. And most listeners don't have the same P1 station all the time, with levels moving up and down. We don't see that in the diary, as we can't measure the same listener week after week, but we can assume that what we see in PPM markets is the same in diary ones.

The real question is, "do any of your local direct or any of the local agency accounts use ratings as the primary decision making criteria for ad buys?"

You and I don't know. We are not on the street in Buffalo. I'd be interested in Buddy's response.

So, I guess the answer is, I truly don't know. NO clients of the Patriot have asked about ratings.
