About 99 FM stations received.

I had some friends over, so I couldn't do much, but around 1 PM Pacific I tried the FM dial on my Radio Shack DX-398 for a couple minutes. Aside from maybe some unusual sounding static and a weird harmonic (a local station on 99.5 showed up full strength on 95.5, complete with RDS data), I didn't notice anything especially exciting. Maybe the opening didn't reach my corner of the world?

Nope, this opening didn't reach the SF Bay... unfortunately. But there's an entire thread on the ionospheric fireworks show *I EXPERIENCED* tonight...coming within the next hour or so.

7/5 Good FM opening this morning on my way to work. 7:43 AM CDT. Also getting 100.7 on 100.9, but they are powerful from Pensacola. Can't get any id's yet.

"Alex FM" Montgomery, AL I believe.

Did anybody see any TV DX during this skip event? I tried all day on Friday to snag some low-VHF DX, but nothing. I went for several hours yesterday thinking that I might even be picking up some low-VHF analog DX from Cuba or even Canada (assuming there are still analog stations in Canada), but I finally discovered that a systems converter (PAL/SECAM/NTSC) that I'd had on all day was creating what looked like intermodulation bars on my analog receiver in the same room. When I turned it off, the bars vanished entirely. (It was attached to a multisystem Sharp VCR/DVD combo that feeds into my living room TV set, I had to use the standards converter to defeat the machine's default functions and get NTSC analog RF 2-6. It's complicated.)

"The Bill Cosby Show" The Sesame Street Rumble (TV Episode 1971) ⭐ 7.5 | Comedy

This is possibly the only television show episode that ever dealt with distant TV reception. It was The Bill Cosby Show, season 2, episode 18, aired 24 January 1971. Chet (Bill Cosby's character) had put up a high-gain antenna to get the football game, blacked out in Los Angeles, from out of town, and I may be having a false memory, but I'm pretty sure the station was in Santa Barbara (probably KEYT). Again, another false memory, but I think they even showed the antenna.

Sadly, a video of this episode isn't available anywhere online that I've been able to find, and if a DVD of season 2 even exists, I can't find that either.

Was up at Boulder Mountain again last Saturday (climbed to the top, 8377 ft.). Boulder Mountain is 8 miles ESE of McCall. Landed two more new logs.

-100.1 KQFO Pasco WA, with La Fiera mentions and a growling bobcat/panther sound effect (which matches the station). 8.4KW at 176 miles. Very weak signal.
-93.3 K227EA Grangeville // KORT-92.7. 250W 66 miles

KBCK-95.9 Columbia Falls, MT is a flamethrower signal up there. Never fades, no matter what, at 265 miles. The station is running a placeholder classical music format (maybe Classical 24?) as their classic country format has moved to KSAM-1240 and 102.7 (Kalispell).

Not a placeholder format, this is KBCK's new format for the forseable future according to their engineer, whos a friend, and who I asked directly about whats going on, @crainbebo

I'd love to see the Wikiformulae that came up with exactly 857,000 watts and 197,000 watts. Keyword here is "apparent".

KGOW has been on its night site full time for several years as its day site is inoperable. I’m in NW Harris County (Houston) and the two sites are 90 degrees apart in direction from me, so easy to tell which one was on the air by a simple null test on a ferrite rod AM radio.

KGOW recently made the full time night site operation official with a STA filing.

The KGOW pattern at the night site is way out of whack. On several recent visits to DFW I have found them booming in at almost local strength, though they shouldn’t be putting anything in that direction. Also at a recent check in San Marcos, Texas during the day I could hear KGOW clashing with KTXZ in Austin. KGOW shouldn’t be putting anything in that direction, either.

The licensed KGOW night site signal is a very tight lobe to the SE. it is actually perfect for the Vietnamese format as it is aimed right at the southwestern section of Houston metro, which is where the target demographic is concentrated. I have seen reports of KGOW being heard along the coast of Brazil at night.

The KGOW day site, back when it was on the air, was a skywave blowtorch during critical hours. Many reports of it easily being heard in the Great Lakes region.
