Birmingham K-Love Makes Birmingham Purchase

(The Crowd Roars) I've been saying for a while now that WPYA should be sold to K-Love (or another nonprofit christian operator) given its dismal performance for the past 27 years it's been on the air.

Once the sale is approved, K-Love might continue to lease WPYA HD2 to BMR. W297BF 107.3 is still owned by Summit Media (not part of the sale)?

I think they can only air a non commercial format on 97.3 once they take over so BMR will need to find another home to feed 107.3fm. Since AIr one is on 102.1 translator Im not sure what EMF will do with 96.1fm once they take over 97.3fm

I hadn't considered the fact 97.3 would be converted to noncommercial status and wouldn't probably be allowed to air a commercial station over their HD channel.

96.5 HD3 is already feeding 96.1 W241AI so maybe the HD channel could be repurposed for BMR to feed 96.1?

WPYA has been probably one of the most noteworthy "cursed" commercial FM radio stations nationally given its weak to downright abysmal ratings performance across an array of formats over the past 25+ years.

Summit selling this station is a no-brainer, and K-Love programming will probably generate stronger ratings than anything else that's aired on this radio station in the past couple decades.

Does anyone have an idea which of the station's formats would have done the best, ratings-wise?

The only time I remember it being semi relevant with my friends and coworkers was back when it was oldies... And the majority of them were pissed at the demotion the format got from 106.9.

In the 12+ numbers (yeah, I realize those aren't used for selling ad time), 97.3 as soft AC (actually, soft oldies) WEZZ-FM pulled a 4.6 share one ratings period which, to my knowledge, was their best 12+ numbers since 97.3 came on the air in the late 90s, beating heritage WMJJ in the ratings.

The largest share ever on the frequency was a 5.3 in the Fall 1999 survey - the station's fourth on the air and first as WRLR.

I'll be curious to know if they've immediately pulled BMR off 97.3-2 or if it's going to stay on there until the sale closes. I doubt many people were listening there instead of the translator but it might be a few. Birmingham seems to be one of those markets where the 250 watt translators do almost as good coverage-wise as the HD subchannels. Most other markets I've been to, like Houston, Austin, Albuquerque, etc, the HD subchannels waaay outpace the translators. But I guess the terrain works against them in B'ham.

I'm pretty sure that once EMF takes over, the HD will still be used. In Huntsville they put Air1 and AFR on subchannels so there's some precedent for using the technology to their advantage.

Maybe AIR1 gets moved from 104.7 HD2 to 97.3 HD2 once the sale is completed/later in time?

I'll check and see if 97.3 HD2 is still airing BMR. I can receive the Bham HD channels most of the time here in south Shelby county.

I got confirmation earlier today that BMR is still on 97.3-HD2 for now, along with 106.9-HD3.

The next thing to speculate on is what will happen to W241AI, the current K-Love translator. Since Air1 is already on a translator, this will be redundant after the format flips on WPYA.

In a perfect radio world I could see EMF dropping the HD simulcasts on WMJJ and WZZK to save money, and maybe selling the translator off to iHeart or Summit to create yet another mini-station in the market. It would be the sensible thing to do. As far as I know, EMF doesn't have any other formats other than K-Love and Air1.

That is not true that they have no other formats other than K-Love and Air1. They have several other radio formats they put on translators across the country. K-Love 90's, K-Love 2000's, K-Love Era's, and K-Love Pop. They will probably put one of those on.

Air1 also has a Spanish version of Air1 they have started to put on translators Música de Adoración.

K-Love also owns a Spanish Christian music network Radio Nueva Vida and has put Christian hip-hop on other translators from Boost Radio. So K-Love has a lot of options.
