These days stations sell their tower sites to developers who can make better use of the land.
But west of Hickory NC I saw those towers once again.

I remember, back in '89, I believe it was, hearing it once, while visiting family in either Boone or Todd, can't quite remember where they were. One of the DJs I heard, never talked and always queued records waaaaaay too close. That same one, just went from music to Brother Maze Jackson's Truck Driver's Special, without an ID or anything! Only reason I know it was them is, I heard the station another time that week and they IDed then. An old friend recorded an ID from them sometime or other and gave it to me on a tape with a bunch of others. He's actually part of my inspiration for collecting IDs, another long-gone hobby, but I digress. I get tickled when I think of the ID: WUIV, Icard, Lenoir, Boone, AUSA Radio Network affiliate. Those towns are kinda a stretch, to my way of tinkin'. Thanks for the memories.Yes still standing, Its now the Icard post office, probably government owned property so no incentive to sell and in a rural area. most likely cheaper to leave the towers standing and if they fall, nature did em a favor. sidenote: I don't see how that station could have ever been successful, and by the look of it why it barely lasted 12 years after signing on, top band AM directional, daytime only in clay rocky NC soil with terrible ground conductivity it had so many things working against it.

Thanks, Eric, for the history lesson. Wonder, did they do well with the preachers, or did 'YCV give them competition back in those days? It's been my experience, you get a preacher on and treat him right, he'll be with you forever. The remaining 2 (of 3 original towers) are for sale, according to the land owner whom I ran into in downtown Valdese recently. He sold one of the towers several years back. He still owns the property, leasing it to the US Postal Service in the front of the building and a 2nd tenant in the rear. I worked at the station my senior year in high school (1985-1986) - my FIRST radio job. WUIV signed on in 1981 and went silent around 1993 - licensed cancelled in 1996.
