...which is going to have a much smaller if not imperceptible audience to begin with, and that's without an FM translator to even justify its existence.

If 1955–1972 oldies were worth putting on an HD subchannel, it would have happened long ago. It hasn't and is not hard to find out why. If the K-Love simulcast arrangement wasn't in place, WMJI would have no active HD subchannels.

It certainly is! However, when thinking of the core demographic, oldies on HD only would not be the best option. WMJI, like any other station, would much rather to just recieve payment to keep the subchannel running.

It would make more sense to have the subchannel if WMJI were to purchase the current FM translator from K-Love (or find their own). That being said, they simply may not want to spend the money on everything.

Unfortunately, HD Radio never took off like it was suppose to. Reasons include...

Lack of low cost, consumer grade receivers due to licensing fees and additional hardware requirements.

The fact that broadcast radio wasn't required to fully transition to digital, like TV.

The rise of smart phones and streaming services, which pretty much made HD Radio pointless.

Problematic reception and limitations, as well as not gaining much (if any) of a quality boost over the analog broadcast.

Problem is that the marketplace rejected HD Radio, so there isn't much of any audience to begin with.

There would be a lot more Clevelanders tuning into the Cool Oldies feed on the iHeart app than there would ever be trying to tune in to the same exact programming on a WMJI HD subchannel.
 
Well, looks like both the Hinckley and Akron translators of KLOV have  finally been shut down (according to K-Love's website).

I’m in a market that had an agreement on a leased facility that fell apart when renewal time came. The people leasing it were have trouble with the monthly payment and was seeking relief.

W206CH Hinckley is now relaying K-Love Eras from KLHY-HD3 in Kona, HI (with functioning RDS info). I wouldn't be surprised if the Akron translator is doing the same. I am not sure why they didn't use WMJI-HD2 instead. Perhaps it's because they don't own that signal?

W206CH is a non-commercial band translator so they can directly feed it via satellite so I am suspecting KLHY-HD3 is what is up on the K-Love Mux as the primary signal for K-Love Eras. If I remember at one point when I was up in the Cleveland area and would tune into 89.1 in the past when it was still running "K-Love" at the TOH it ID'ed as KLOV Winchester (which is what generally K-Love Translators whom are fed directly via Satellite ID as).

and putting it on an HD.. makes the rates different vs if it was streaming only, as for royalities, etc
