The FCC is still going after pirates. Every week Lance on the Radio Insight FCC update, reports one or more getting busted, and even having to forfeit the owned property where the signal is originating. That alone would scare ME away from operating an 'unlicensed' radio station. But for some folks, it seems to be worth the risk.I also heard one going through Alger, near Bellingham on 101.7 a few days ago. It was playing Steve Bannon. So it certainly wasn't CIVL or CHLY. They've been popping up all over the place lately. There are a couple closer to Arlington, one on 99.5 (playing a country CD) and one just south on 97.7 (Hip-Hop)
My theory is since the DOGE cuts to the FCC and other gov't departments, some people might have it in their heads that they're in the clear.
But on the upside, I guess there are still people in the general public interested in radio....
I imagine especially if you're a tenant on somebody's property with nothing to lose, it's worth the risk. The FCC is still going after pirates. Actually, it's usually the engineers. They have signal triangulators.Curious does the FCC have a person(s) looking for unlicensed stations or does it rely on technology to track them down.
But doesn't the FCC have to receive a complaint before they act? There are no legal FM stations on 87.9, so who's gonna complain?Actually, it's usually the engineers. They have signal triangulators.
Sure it wasn't Mr. Wacky who runs the KXPB station? I hope not!! I've always wanted to go back to that Wacky Warehouse thrift/hardware/everything store right before the state park. What a fun experience. You need a 16d nail? They got it. Need a nut for a toilet? They got that too. Want a DVD or a Goosebumps book for your kiddo? Yeah, probably got that too.One was busted recently in, of all places, Pacific Beach WA. Maybe the guy from Portland wanted a couple days at the ocean?![]()
