WHAT COULD WORK ON 106.1?

Bo Corona is on FIERRO HD on KLOL HD2. Doubt he would leave KLOL HD2 for a small translator.

What ever happened to El Muñeco? Is he still around? Not trying to sound mean but is he alive?
Isn't that station who posted on Facebook? I'm sure more people have access to listen to the translator than an HD2.

I think with maybe Bo Corona in the mornings it could work.
If I really had to launch a Tejano format against my better judgement, I wouldn't recycle old talent. Nothing against Bo Corona. He's a nice guy with an even nicer mullet. But I would go younger and try new things. It's what the genre has needed for the longest of time.

But like I said earlier, I would try Vietnamese programming before trying any type of Spanish language programming. It's just too saturated at the moment.

My limited understanding is that Fierro HD2 is a pet project of JD up in Dallas. He is the VP of KMVK in DFW and KLOL in Houston, so he has the full backing of Audacy on this.

For the format to be exclusively in HD, I'm impressed to see it show up in the ratings (even if it is meaningless) in both cities. Fierro peaked at 0.4 two months ago in DFW, which beat out LMN's 99.1 KFZO-FM. Those of you who know Dallas will remember that KFZO was a Tejano station under Heftel (later Tichenor) in the 90s and early 2000s. Interesting tidbit.

As mentioned elsewhere, the downtown transmitter for 106.1 is in the wrong place for reaching Vietnamese speaking demographics, which are concentrated in the SW part of the market. Ironically the 106.1 translator used to be located in that area.

Agree that Houston may be at a saturation point for Spanish language formats, despite current demographic realities. That’s why I suggested a national CCM/religious format earlier.

These days a 1 kHz tone would probably beat out KFZO, which has fallen into complete irrelevance.

Correct, as the oddly named Kick-FM KHCK from 1995 to 2004. Replaced Z-Rock of all things.

IMO I don't think Tejano counts as Spanish language programming. Is the music in Spanish? Yes. Is it targeted at Hispanics? Yes. But the imaging is in English because the Hispanics who listen to Tejano are English-dominant and have lived in Texas for generations - sometimes before the Alamo. It is not aimed at immigrants who have completely different tastes.

Yes and No! Tejano is Huge in Monterrey and in other cities in Mexico .The delivery is different but the music is the same. Tejano I would say (having had been the person) that tried it last in Houston when I leased 101.7 and 1540M and ran Puro Tejano for a year is more of a culture than just a format or genre . I do agree it would have a chance on a good signal not sure 106.1 would fit the bill .

There are Spanish CHR/Top40 stations with imaging that is bilingual scattered across the country. And like Tejano, they also target Hispanics beyond first generation arrivals. Yet we wouldn't call those stations "English" language.

To me, Tejano is (or at least should be) strictly a Spanish language format. How the imaging is done doesn't change much. You're right in that some older people think "Tejano" should include English language songs. But those same "Tejanos" probably hold anti-Mexican sentiments (a real phenomenon I was introduced to when I briefly worked in San Antonio) and you want to avoid that at all costs. To them, the synthesizer is what makes Tejano and the accordion is too "ethnic".

You can't reinvent the format by using the same attitudes that doomed it in the first place.

I never said the songs had to be in English. I was talking about the imaging and the jocks. That is generally in English.

Anyone think 106.1 will find a client willing to pay 35k-50k a month plus pay for a HD by September 1?
KJOZ is still the originating station for K291CE according to the FCC, though 880 has been off the air for seven weeks now.

Anyone have any guesses as to the cost of leasing KJOZ versus an FM HD subchannel?

Maybe sell K291CE to Hope Media Group for its Worship 24/7 format. Beats the current 91.3 translator.

The plus is optional here
As far as the FCC is concerned, the obligation to have an originating station falls on the owner and not the tenant. Even if you, as a tenant, sign a contract with the translator owner that makes you responsible for finding an originating station, the fines/punishment will be levied on the translator's owner. (the dispute that follows between the tenant and the translator owner would be a civil matter not concerning the FCC).

I don’t know what has been going on lately with 106.1 but it sounds horrible. Much more static than before and also picking up La Mejor 104.5 in some spots, completely eating up the Radio Vision Latina programming. And of course still picking up KTTX and KIOC

There was no trace of K291CE at a check this afternoon in the Willowbrook Mall area; only heard KIOC and KTTX fighting it out. The translator is either off the air or operating at very low power. Of course with originating station KJOZ having been off the air for two months now, the translator shouldn’t be on the air at all.
