Buffalo WBEN up for a Marconi award

I am no fan of WBEN(as my postings here have noted from time to time), but I have to give credit where it's due and note-per Radio Insight-that WBEN was nominated for NAB Medium Market Station of the year. They're facing...

-KBOI-AM/FM(Boise, Idaho) which runs news/talk
-KRMG-FM(Tulsa, Okla.), also a news talk station(the AM station has the same call letters, but it's positioned as 102.3 KRMG, Tulsa's News and Talk)
-WTIB-FM(Greenville, NC), formatted as a talk station
-WYCT-FM(Pensacola, Fla.), which runs a country format as Cat Country 98.7 .

I'm surprised that WECK did not get a nomination. Locally owned, locally managed, locally programmed. Quite successful and a good example of independent owners with successful ways of doing local radio.

Is Buddy a member of the NAB? That's one of the entry requirements. Also someone has to nominate it.

Participation is only open to NAB radio member stations in good standing of the fifty (50) United States, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories except where prohibited.

I appreciate those words very much. No, I am not a member of the NAB, the NYSBA, or the Buffalo Broadcasters. All of these organizations do things the exact opposite of what I think is right. They are all beauty contests, plus they are bought and paid for . Just my opinion. I have no interest in following their lead. They’ve all killed broadcasting

As long as I am on this rant, I do want to congratulate WBEN. I worked their for 25 years, had a lot of fun, and made a ton of money. However, RIGHT before I announced I was leaving to buy WECK, they accounced their merger with CBS. While everyone else was celebrating the merger, I was not, because I knew what would come from it.

I no longer respect WBEN the way I did, especially after they got wind of The Patriot and essentially blocked me from FOX news and FOX programming. WBEN wanted nothing to do with FOX for years, until the day I announced The Patriot. I was given even excuse not to work with me by the higher ups at FOX. It was all because of Marconi nominated WBEN, as they were threatened. They also pulled the same crap with Bloomberg. To me, it constitues a very unfair trade practice to try to squash the little guy, but it gives me a good feeling that they were threatened by me.

Again, while I am happy Buffalo is in the mix for a Marconi, I can't say I respect the company that is. Must be nice to walk out of a 1.8 billion dollar bankruptcy, screw vendors and taxpayers, and be proud of it. I realize that it was not just Buffalo that caused the bankruptcy, but the company is part of the overall radio problem. Several more will soon be filing for bankruptcy, simply because the industry is no longer run by broadcasters.

I have many friends at Audacy, but it went two ways....either they have never talked to me since, or they now work for me. One or the other. Either way, enjoy the glow of achievement, but it will come back to haunt them how they backhanded me from FOX.

All these are good points. I started losing interest in the NAB about 20 years ago as they became more of a PAC than a defender of the broadcast industry. A better job was done by the RAB under Erika Farber.

The NAB does many TV broadcasters (at least small independents or in our case public TV) no favors either. They are currently (IMO at the behest of Nexstar and Sinclair among other large commercial owners who wish to sell bandwidth for datacasting) trying to force the adoption of the new ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard while sun-setting the current ATSC 1.0 standard in the next few years. What they fail to do is finding funding sources for the substantial investment needed to implement this plan. While ATSC 3.0 has many advantages, it also requires different broadcast antennas and transmitters not to mention studio equipment upgrades. New antennas trigger extremely expensive tower analyses and work to bring the towers into compliance for the new loading. This is presumativley on the backs of the broadcasters, many of which will have no choice but to either sell or go out of business. And this doesn't even begin to discuss the lack of receivers available to consumers. All this equals less choice for the end users.
