R. Kelly vs. Diddy

With both artists being locked up for some pretty crazy stuff, why do radio tend to be more friendly towards Diddy and play his music, as opposed to R. Kelly? I rarely hear a R. Kelly song on the radio like I used to.

I noticed that too because 93.5 KDAY plays his music. Hell I even heard “I’ll Be Missing You” on 94.7 The Wave in recent years.

I think that to answer that question, you have to look at how well the generes they were in the 90s are being played today. P. Diddy (or Puff Daddy as I remember him) basically did mid-tempo raps while R. Kelly's music was pretty much pop/soul ballads. When I turn my local classical hiphop station on today, I hear very few slow ballads from not only R. Kelly but also D'Angelo, Mariah Carey, and Janet Jackson (the uptempo stuff by the latter two artists still gets played on some current and classic R&B outlets.) Since radio airplay is driven by numbers, my best guess is the reason you're not hearing R. Kelly has less to do with him and his current incarceration than the current popularity of the musical style on which he built his career.

Actually, within the last year or so, I haven't any Puff Daddy music on our stations other than "Mo Money Mo Problems" by Notorious B.I.G (even with that, Diddy's verse is edited out). When Power 106 did their throwback weekend during the 4th of July, there was no Diddy music there either. No sight of "I'll Be Mussing You" or both of the "I Need A Girl" parts, even though those were massive hits back in the day. I haven't heard "I'll Be Missing You" on The Wave since 2023.

Here in Los Angeles, music from Diddy haven't been on the radio since 2023.

KJLH Los Angeles hasn’t played R Kelly since 2018-19. The station played him a lot back in the mid 90’s (when the station was Rhythm 102.3 KJLH) until 2018 right around the time when “I Admit It” was released.
