Ernie Sanders (2)

On my car radio on Monday night, 08/25/2025 I heard Ernie Sanders on his usual station WHKW AM1220, BUT also heard the same program on AM1160. Also curious was that both stations had horrible quality signals in Southwest Cuyahoga County. AM1160 is an out-of-town signal. 1220 is in Cleveland, and is supposed to be a 50,000 watt station with a, supposedly, strong signal reaching Elyria to the west. As I drove in the area, there were a couple of times that 1160AM was easier to hear than the local AM1220!

Additionally, now at 10:52 a.m. on Tuesday morning, I dialed over to AM1220 and who was on? Ernie Sanders. How often is he on? Seems like it might be, kind of like, the running and re-running of Al Sharpton on 1490AM.

Ernie Sanders pays for his airtime from 10am-noon and 10pm-midnight, he has the same arrangement with WHTX 1570 in Warren.

When 1220 was WGAR and owned with great pride by Nationwide, they took care of the transmitter facilities. The pattern has always had a cut to the west/southwest (see link). But sadly, as with many AM stations, the sites have been allowed to deteriorate. I am sure that WHKW is no exception. WHKW-AM Radio Station Coverage Map
The land WHKW's towers sit on has been parceled for development. A senior assisted living facility was built about five years right next door at the intersection of Broadview and Atkins and that clearly is making matters worse with the signal. I've heard the transmitter building/former WKNR studios will eventually be torn down if it hasn't been already.

But even when 1220 was WKNR, the western null hit Lorain County hard at night and really made the station a difficult listen after sunset. Which is why the then-Indians needed a Lorain County affiliate when WKNR was the radio flagship.
