Buffalo NFL Games on WLVL 1340am

There is good news for football fans in Western New York as radio station WLVL 1340 AM based in Lockport will be carrying NFL Sunday games beginning on Sept. 7 in a deal that program director Frank Miller says was negotiated with Compass Media Networks.

“It is certainly of great interest to the many NFL fans across the area,” said Miller in making the announcement for WLVL, a station along with WEBR Radio, 1440 AM, owned by Bill Yuhnke’s Kenmore Broadcasting.

The schedule will feature some of the best available nationally broadcast NFL games each week. The games will air on 1340 AM, streaming at WLVL.com and the WLVL app.

“We realize this is Bills country,” said Miller, “but we look to provide all NFL fans in WNY with other matchups that are relevant and important.”

“We are absolutely delighted that Frank was able to put this together,” said Yuhnke, “and I know our many listeners will be happy too, as football begins another year of gridiron excitement that they will be able to catch up with on WLVL. We are very pleased about this addition to our radio lineup.”

Once the Yankee season is concluded, there will be games at 1 p. m. and 4 p. m. just about every Sunday during the regular season, with occasional Sunday night and Thursday night matchups slotted in from time to time, according to WLVL’s announcement.

Unless Compass is carrying Sunday and Thursday night games this season, those Sunday and Thursday night games will likely come from Westwood One. Since WWKB-AM carried those games in the past (and I'm assuming they're carrying them again this year), the deal probably means that WLVL will carry any Westwood One Sunday night and Thursday night games should WWKB have a conflict.

Of course, I could be wrong...

Looking at this thread, a couple of other thoughts have occurred to me. First, it looks like WLVL may not be received that well in Buffalo. Though it's a Buffalo market station, it appears its primary service is to Niagara Falls.

The other thought I have has to do with whether or not local professional football team owners object to competitors' games being played over the air on other local (or semi-local) outlets while their games are underway. I believe that local sports outlet KQFN in Tempe may have had its hand slapped a few times because the station ran different football game broadcasts while KTAR-AM/KMVP-FM were carrying Arizona Cardinals games.

I think any airing rights are probably done by Compass Media, the syndicate. As WLVL is not a Buffalo station at all, it comes in as a fringe. It’s a Niagara County station, aimed more at the Lockport NY area. Sirius XM also broadcasts all the games, and my guess is they have the right to do that, but of course you need a subscription to Sirius.

It would be interesting to know if this is allowed on the WLVL stream.

Either way, I think it’s good for the area they serve, and more importantly it should be simple to sell at a premium
