RIP ELMNT FM Radio

What happens to the frequencies now? Are they put up for auction like in the States? Or a competitive application status?
Nope. You can't just say "Here CRTC, here's a pile of money..." It doesn't quite work like that.
In both markets, CRTC will consider anyone who is willing to do any sort of Indigenous programming FIRST.
If nobody steps up to the plate to offer such programming, the CRTC studies what
might be a good fit for those frequencies. They might consider a community radio station or they may consider
something that is not already in the market.
OR
in the case of Toronto, the CRTC could just as easily consider Flow 98.7, if they make a request for a stronger frequency.
There will be many applicants.
One thing that won't happen is, CRTC will not hand it to just anyone to do hit music or anything already big in the market.
It will be interesting to see what decision the CRTC actually makes for both stations once all is said and done...

If someone applies for either, the CRTC will determine if the markets can sustain new stations. If so, they’ll issue a call for applications.
Very true, but, as I've mentioned, the CRTC will most likely consider anything that is not already in the market, or a community radio station.

106.5 in Toronto has failed twice as an indigenous station. I think the first one got in trouble with the CRTC as well
Yes, that is correct.
I somehow doubt there will be a third. As I mentioned already, it will be interesting to see what happens next.
TMU (AKA Ryerson University) might aim to move their AM 1280 community radio station to FM to bring them back to where they were YEARS before they lost their 88.1 FM licence.
(also a stronger signal than 1280)
That's ONE possibility. Many others are out there...
