High school/minor league sports on OTA

While checking out the pre-emptions thread in National TV, I noticed WHO TV Des Moines is broadcasting select high school football games. Is any other OTA station airing high school sports. For that matter any stations airing minor league sports?

Are we talking about HS games airing on a primary channel or a subchannel? I doubt any network affiliate would blow out programming for that.

An issue is the cost of producing the games versus potential revenue. Some stations that have tried HS football found it to be a money pit.

Here in Houston ABC O&O KTRK had a slate of HS football on one of its subchannels some years ago, but IIRC it only lasted a couple of seasons.

WXSP airs a handful of GR Griffins games on FRI & SAT nights during the season, 1 or 2 GVSU football games. No High School Football games or boy's basketball either Fanduel Sports airs the championships games for HS football, boys & girls basketball that's about it.

aren't most pf the people who follow a HS FB team already at the game? do they watch other HS FB games that don't have any impact on their team?

In the Knoxville, TN area, "The Knox" WKNX, high school football happens on Thursday and Friday nights, and they do "Rivalry Thursdays" packed with lots of commercials

Does SWX count? Cowles' sports subchannel in eastern WA and in MT. They have three separate feeds for KNDU, KHQ and KULR/KTMF. Multiple football games every season plus basketball and other sports.

KPRC blew out Thursday night NBC programming to run some HS games on 2.1 a couple of years ago, but again, it didn't last long.

I recall seeing a network affiliate in the West Texas TV Guide back in the 1980s that aired high school football in prime time, I don't recall particulars, I was traveling through the area and picked up that edition at a store. High school football is like a religion out there.

I had forgotten about that. I think it was a year when NBC’s fall schedule was delayed for a couple of months due to an actors/writers strike. KPRC aired the network schedule after Seth Meyers, IIRC. Transplant was a show I watched that was affected by that and I had to make sure the DVR caught the oddball air time.

Yeah I've seen everything from girls soccer to reruns of months old football games on SWX
I've actually been a camera operator for a few of those basketball games up in the Yakima-Ellensburg region. A lot of the equipment is KHQ hand-me-downs. Or even previously used at KULR. They get the job done at least.

and many of those games include prayers before the game despite possible church-state separation issues

You don’t need to be all that fancy for HS sports productions. If you can replicate the production level of, say, an ESPN+ college game for streaming, you’re doing well.

When I called games before Comcast bought every area system and cut down to a game a week, we were up to five cameras and a replay unit in a truck built to cover parades and city council meetings, not sports. People liked it.

You can do quite well with five cameras for football using high cameras on the 20/50/20 yard lines, one end zone shot and a roving field camera. Just make sure the high cameras know how their assignments change with the game field position.
