Washington Kulshan Community Media (KMRE) buys Grays Harbor Area Translator

Boss Bill will have to explain this one at some point.

K226AN in Montesano was just sold for $3000 to Kulshan Community Media, the people behind non-comm KMRE in Bellingham.

Why? Could this be a future HD2-4 channel offering on the upgraded KJET, still operating K226AN as a fill-in translator? Does KMRE plan to expand to the Grays Harbor region? Could K225AN be moved to Capitol Peak?
 
Is KJET planning for HD operations or is it something people are just assuming because it's upgrading?

Still not daring to hope anything on 105.7 remains interesting to the broader market, given the history of 93.7, 98.5, and 104.5 but we live in strange days indeed.
 
Interesting, I found out the KMRE studios have moved to Whatcom Community College. How does that work? A non-profit operating inside a state school building? Perhaps there is some commercial lease space similar to the foodcourts found at many state colleges.

we;re moving our studios to a school district office with office space available.,

This isn't unusual at all. Many public stations operate in the facilities of unconnected schools.

Sorry folks, it has nothing to do with KJET... and KMRE is not expanding to Grays Harbor...
K226AN was the only signal I had remaining on the South Montesano tower, and there was no practical use for it at that location. (I already have 3 HD channels and 3 FM translators in Grays Harbor, plus two full market FMs). Due to FCC "white area" rules which allow FM translators to move to a location without any 60dBu non-commercial signals, this helps KMRE better serve the Blaine area. Everybody wins. The county bought my tower for E-911, and we basically gave away the translator to a non-profit.

Don't forget, gang. Main studios don't matter anymore anyway. They're not required.
 
Kulshan flled to move K226AN to Blaine, Washington. It would be 20 watts on 94.9 MHz as a translator of KMRE, Bellingham. Despite second-channel adjacents in Vancouver BC, there's still surprising good coverage possible. Much of the 60 dBu falls on the Canadian side, albeit south of the Fraser River.

The move strategy is backed by the concept of "White Area Service" for NCE translators. Despite the messy FM spectrum around the border, Blaine is underserved for US NCE signals.

Now - Can you do anything for Point Roberts?
 
Today, the FCC (and hence the Canadians) approved Montesano to Blaine move (and frequency change). The new callsign will be " K235DF" on 94.9 with 20 watts ERP. The translator will rebroadcast KMRE.
 
I'm in the Lower Mainland, and still get a fuzzy (and usually quite listenable) KJEB on 95.7. As far as I know, 95.7 is being used as a translator for KARI 550 from the same tower referenced in this engineering study. It might be workable if someone wants to target listeners very close to the border, but it's a bit of a sloppy mess if you get too far from the tower.
 
I almost broke even on the Blaine translator deal... thinking I spent more than $3,000 in the transition, but at least it went to a worthy non-comm up north.
