ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel Live

Here is the petition that got KABC-TV targeted over the Jimmy Kimmel situation.

Also the one where Tegna Owned ABC affiliate KXTV somehow got shot over this I hope it has nothing to do with FCC Chairman Carr response to Jimmy Kimmel and The View.
Let's just note that the petition is complete rubbish. If it was against the rules for a broadcast program to operate with a political slant (whether to the left or to the right), AM talk radio would have been gone on a long time ago.

As for Jimmy Kimmel's statement, I'd say that the transcripts of the text messages by the alleged murderer that were released the day after Kimmel's monologue do suggest that he got it wrong. However, at the time of the monologue that transcript was not yet available and the claim by the Utah governor that the killer was "deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology" was essentially unsubstantiated. In fact, I'd say that the transcript is still pretty thin information on which to base such a claim.

But, again, I have to note that making an inaccurate statement is also not basis for threatening a license. Because if that were the case, the AM dial would be emptied out as a result of misinformation on the variety of right-wing talk shows that have put out claims far more outrageous and inaccurate than what Kimmel said.

You asked for a source, and I delivered. Now you quibble about the source, I'm not going to discuss the politics. He said it. You can hear his voice.
The problem is that it does not included the whole context. The comment made earlier about Martin Luther King was also, while inappropriate in any context, part of a much more detailed statement about how his personal life was a contradiction to his public statements.
There are people twisting what Kimmel said to suit their agenda. The fact is he said it. and he's dealing with the consequences. That's it for here.
I don't see anyone "twisting" what he said; he said something that was not true to make a point in his monologue. The item he lied about was a news story about which there were facts that showed that his statement was false.

You make a very good point. I'll bet we see a variety of nuisance suits against ABC and, perhaps, the other two "big networks". It seems, in this case, that your point is not understood and that the petitioner does not understand that networks don't require and FCC license.

Again, a valid point. As I look at the timeline, we did have the solid information about the inscriptions on the bullets that showed deep left philosophies.

However, this is a case of murder, closely following other assassination attempts. I'd expect reactions to be considerably more vehement and forceful.

Godwin's law except now it's George Soros.
Tell that to about 50% of the population of the UK whose purchasing power was considerably reduced or whose retirement income no longer made it through each month.

On one hand, the more liberal Guardian says:

Black Wednesday was a bruising and humbling episode but turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the economy. The pound fell sharply, which was good for exports. Interest rates were cut and a long 16-year boom followed. Yet despite Soros being a strong supporter of the EU, his activities arguably lit the long fuse of Euroscepticism that eventually led to the Brexit vote of 2016.

Investopedia, on the other hand, says:

George Soros became very wealthy, but also infamous for his role on Black Wednesday. He was praised by some as a genius and a visionary, and criticized by others as a greedy and ruthless speculator who exploited the weaknesses of the system and caused harm to millions of people. He also was accused of having a political agenda behind his actions, as he was a vocal supporter of European integration and a critic of Britain’s reluctance to join the euro

While the U.K. economy recovered, there has always been an issue as to whether big investors should manipulate currencies to the extent that it might affect the lives of the general population of nations that find their money in play.

The problem is that it does not included the whole context.

Nor does your version of the Kimmel quote

I don't see anyone "twisting" what he said;

Because you've taken it out of context.

there were facts that showed that his statement was false.

So what? His statement doesn't have to be true. Sean Hannity says so.

You and the right are holding him and Colbet to different standards than anyone in conservative talk radio. They all answer to the same FCC.

Nor does your version of the Kimmel quote
But in this case, he starts by citing a news item that is false. Nothing that follows excuses that.
Because you've taken it out of context. His statement doesn't have to be true. Sean Hannity says so.
He said, at the risk of angering some with a paraphrase, that the MAGA folks were in a tizzy trying to cover the fact that the shooter was one of them. That is and was a false statement based on facts known at the time.

But in this case, he starts by citing a news item that is false. Nothing that follows excuses that.

Huh? The governor says "It's one of us." Is that false? Did the governor lie?

He said, at the risk of angering some with a paraphrase, that the MAGA folks were in a tizzy trying to cover the fact that the shooter was one of them. That is and was a false statement based on facts known at the time.

But they ARE in a tizzy. That's what this is about. They've tried to make this about politics. and it's not. He wasn't charged with any political crime.

As for facts...Once again: SO WHAT? Since when was a talk show host required to deal in facts? Show me that FCC law.

Eh....Robinson did say Kirk spread hate so he tried to stop him. But, Kimmel just said they were in a tizzy trying to prove he wasn't one of them...not that he was.

Let's just note that the petition is complete rubbish. If it was against the rules for a broadcast program to operate with a political slant (whether to the left or to the right), AM talk radio would have been gone on a long time ago.
And there it is, talk about the hypocrisy. Does MAGA feel that conservative talk radio is exempt from hate filled speech, anger, and misinformation? Apparently, they do.

We have to be clear about what's happening in this thread, because there are several different things.

The FCC Chairman has made a statement, but not taken any action. So is he simply expressing his first amendment right? Or is he acting in an official capacity? So far, he's just expressed his opinion.

The president has expressed his opinion. He isn't in any position to take action. He admitted that, and delegated it to the FCC. But he's expressed his opinion, to which he's entitled. It's a stupid opinion, but it doesn't matter.

Nexstar has broken their contract. That's a legal thing. They gave a reason, but it's based on opinion, not any legal reason. So they're expressing their personal taste about a work of art. That's fine for criticism, but not applicable in a court of law. Disney can hold them to their contract and make them air the commercials in the contracted daypart. At the minimum they must run the spots as scheduled.

Jimmy Kimmel has expressed his opinion. He isn't in an authoritative position where what he says matters. Jack Benny said for years that he was 39 years old. We all know that was a lie. But his show was never canceled over it. Kimmel and everyone on the show must get paid. They did nothing to cause them to lose any money. Kimmel hasn't broken any rules or laws.

Disney has responded to some affiliates by pulling the show for a few days. They've angered their talent, their employees, the unions, some regular viewers, and the stockholders. That's a business issue.

Some say the killer did this because of social media. Social media is being blamed for "radicalizing" a young man. However, a lot of this Kimmel furor was also caused by social media. Social media reacted to Kimmel's statement, and it all went viral. The only people profiting here are the social media companies. Why aren't people blaming social media for this firestorm the way they're blaming social media for the murder? It seems to be the same thing, doesn't it?

Any quibbles about any of this??

Disney stock dropped several dollars in a few days.
That is a normal variation in stock prices. The market "wobbles" and for shares trading at over $100, a couple of dollars is not very significant unless it is followed by additional down days.

It is around $113 today. Within the last year it has been as low as $80 and as high as $124. It was as high as $197 in earlier 2021!

They have had a number of underperforming movies, and the pandemic hurt the parks and cruise lines.

i'm surprised this thread is already lasting longer then expected, i figured it would be shut down by now, but then again, the Kimmel/ABC/Trump fallout is continuing.

i just hope we aren't reaching the beginning of the end of the United States and the start of "The Christian State of Trump". and i still wouldn't be surprised Kimmel gets a golden parachute deal and leave ABC the same way Conan O'Brien was screwed out the Tonight Show less than a year after he took over and left NBC for TBS. at least in Conan's case, it wasn't a network siding with a fascist dictator like president and instead it was a fellow late night talk show host who prematurely retired from his previous show hosting duties cause the network didn't want to lose it's future top late night show host to a rival network.

Again, a valid point. As I look at the timeline, we did have the solid information about the inscriptions on the bullets that showed deep left philosophies.
No.
They showed "gamer" memes. Two of the inscriptions were from a specific video game. One was a meme about furries. And one called the target "gay."
What "leftist" philosophy considers calling someone gay an insult or "own?"
Also, while we're on this topic - what political position has been proven with evidence that this shooter held?
Being in a relationship with someone of the same sex or transgender does not make them a liberal or orthodox leftist. Disliking Charlie Kirk for his position on that subject, if that was in fact his motive, doesn't prove any other political positions were even held by this person. It's never been proven he even voted for a mainstream Democrat much less a "progressive" or "leftist." Or that he believes in party politics, voting, the American system or anything besides nihilism.

Before I start, you make valid and challenging points.
No.
They showed "gamer" memes. Two of the inscriptions were from a specific video game. One was a meme about furries. And one called the target "gay."
It's to late to be searching all the sources, but one of the bullets was labeled "Hey fascist! Catch! ↑ → ↓↓↓". Calling the victim "fascist" is a very clear and almost customary progressive label for MAGA. The "O Bella Ciao" message is an anti-Fascist phrase used against Mussolini in WW II. Google AI: ""Bella Ciao" is an anti-fascist Italian folk song that serves as a symbol of freedom and resistance, famously sung on Italy's Liberation Day (April 25th) to commemorate the end of fascist rule and Nazi occupation. "
What "leftist" philosophy considers calling someone gay an insult or "own?"
I don't understand your point.
Also, while we're on this topic - what political position has been proven with evidence that this shooter held?
Those two anti-Fascist inscriptions would seem to be rather difinitive.

That's conjecture, while all the other evidence points to anti-MAGA extremism. One point that has not been mentioned enough is that the shooter waited until Kirk began stating his disapproval for transexuals, which does seem to be either a freaky coincidence or a statement in defense of his relationship partner.

When someone like Fred Rogers dies and his quotes were used, no one screamed the trite old “context” nonsense. Perhaps because he wasn’t a horrible person.

Context does not excuse racism, bigotry and the like. Ever.
The comment made earlier about Martin Luther King was also, while inappropriate in any context,
You don’t say.
part of a much more detailed statement about how his personal life was a contradiction to his public statements.
So still inappropriate.

Have a mirror handy?

Except it was.

Kind of like MAGA called its opponents? Or was that lacking context. 🤣
Those two anti-Fascist inscriptions would seem to be rather difinitive.
That fascism is bad?
That's conjecture,
The irony here is rich.
while all the other evidence points to anti-MAGA extremism.
You mean speculation by those with a vested interest in pushing that narrative?

The lengths to which the conspiracy theorists will go is remarkable.

This shows the generational split between the shooter and law enforcement. To law enforcement, it's a crime. To the shooter, this is a video game.

Here's the story you're referencing. The phrase comes from the video game Helldivers2:

Parents are concerned about social media. They believe it's "radicalizing" our youth. They totally ignore video games. Where do these young men get the idea that using guns to kill people is a game? From video games. I watch these boys play these games and it's not cops and robbers. The goal is to kill. This young shooter achieved the goal. He's a good shot. He hit his target at 200 yards with one bullet. People on the right think he's calling them names. He's just playing a video game. He has no idea what he's done.
