He was the man who replaced Buddy Holly in The Crickets. He wrote I Fought The Law for the Bobby Fuller Four and the Clash. He wrote the theme for the Mary Tyler Moore TV show. He passed away today:

Interesting that the original was only released as a single in the UK (that's the picture)

A standards station I am listening to did several versions of the Mary Tyler Moore theme, including Joan Jett's. After a few seconds of Jett, the DJ said, "Okay, that's enough of that."

Edit: The last version played on the show was the closing theme for the first two seasons but the cat didn't sound right.
