KESS 107.1 changing call to KQBU-FM

The KESS calls have been in DFW for roughly 40 years (at least). I remember them at 94.1 before it switched to Christian music as KOJO. The KESS calls migrated to 1270 after that.

Can’t remember exactly when KLTY left 94.9 the first time and 94.1 went Christian, but it would seem to me to have been around 1987.

The KESS call first appeared in DFW in 1977 on 93.9, replacing the KBUY-FM call the station had for a decade. In 1986 the call went to 1270 about the time the 93.9 license was moved to 94.1. The call briefly disappeared from 1270 in 1990 but was reinstated in 1991. It eventually showed up on 107.9 around 2003 before moving to 107.1 in 2013.
Are they breaking off from the 107.9 simulcast?
I’m thinking a flip will involve the 93.3 in Houston. I don’t see TU breaking the DFW simulcast, but I guess we will know for sure on October 2.

As a side note, KBUY FM was the only Spanish language station in Dallas/Fort Worth in the summer of 1969 when my family moved to Dallas. At 7pm in the evening KBUY FM switched to English language and at one point in the early 1970s played Southern Gospel music 7-9pm followed by 2 hours of preaching & teaching.

KESS history - with the exception of a seven month span, the calls have been on the air in DFW on AM, FM or both, continuously for the last 49 years.

93.9/94.1 Fort Worth: 4/7/76-11/17/86 (frequency shifted in Nov. 1981)
1270 Fort Worth: 11/17/86-9/19/90; 4/29/91-3/23/04
107.9 Lewisville: 1/27/03-8/8/13
107.1 Benbrook: 8/8/13-10/2/25

October 2 came and went with no change in Houston, and I assume nothing happened with 107.1 in DFW. Appears the FCC didn’t greenlight the call swap request before the government shutdown.

The flip of 93.3 in Houston happened this morning, now running Norteña as Estereo Latino. Anything different with the 107.1/107.9 simulcast in DFW? Did the legal ID for 107.1 change to KQBU-FM?

Does anyone even post in the DFW page? 😂

I’m assuming nothing happens here. Is 94.1 QUE BUENA over there?. I remember last time I went to DFW they were playing corridos. But didn’t get to listen long enough to hear the whole song since my sister controls the radio on road trips 😂.

Yes, KLNO 94.1 is Que Buena and carries both the El Bueno, La Mala y El Feo and Free-Guey shows, just like KLTN in Houston. There were some who thought a possible format swap was possible, with Spanish language CHR Latino Mix going to KLNO and Que Buena going to the 107.1/107.9 simulcast, but I'm assuming nothing happened.

I would assume that wouldn’t be possible, as 94.1 was the only TU station that broadcasts over Cedar Hill, which could cover the whole metroplex, plus they even have better listenership on 94.1 than on the other station that used the format in the past. I would say that they could just do another DFW callsign swap, but only with 94.1 and 107.1 swapping callsigns letters to better fit their respective brands, Like KLNO can match with “LatiNO Mix” and KQBU-FM be “Que BUena”

After the call sign changed went into effect 20 days ag, I heard KQBU ID hour part on 107.1 close to 9.7 miles where the transmitter is at. However, oddly the HD call sign didn’t get changed to “Latino Mix,” or “KQBU-FM” HD call sign name. Not sure when but I did see one went in Beaumont talked about changed to “KESS-FM.” HD name.
