WCSB Flips to Jazz

Lance has the full story here:

I think it was handled incredibly poorly. When you wonder why people don't trust institutions and those "in power" just look at the message this sent to those students. No gratitude, no advance warning. Just "you're done!" and hyping the new thing. On the verge of their 50th anniversary.

The way it was handled at several other universities is they turned the license in to the FCC without informing or including the students.

The reality is that colleges want to get out of the radio business.

There's more on the switch here:

Of note, Ideastream was awarded a $1 million grant from the Chuck and Char Fowler Family Foundation, which will be used to construct a studio for JazzNEO/WCSB at the Idea Center. No cash was exchanged between the university and Ideastream.

Well this sucks. I didn't listen to WCSB very much, usually just Songs and Melodies from Beautiful Slovenia on Wednesday evening. Hopefully, the nationality programs will find a new home.

I wonder if this means the university will retain the old studios for use as an online station, or they'll just repurpose the space for other uses.

Given the way they threw out the students with police escort tells me they won't be doing online radio.

Read the article Nathan posted, it mentions plans for some of the different music shows about other countries.

And even then that building was far too disconnected from what has become the core of the campus alongside Euclid Avenue.

The realities of the college getting rid of the station still don't excuse how they treated the students. They paid tuition and (I'm guessing) student activities fees and participated in the station. It's inexcusable to handle it that way, even if what happened to the station was necessary.

That's how colleges treat undergrads. In most cases, it was their parents who paid the tuition and fees. Not the students.

So now with Ideastream, the student experience will be more about learning than about an activity.

I am a big proponent of student run college radio. I did it myself, and I later became an advisor. I'd like to see it continue. The concern of the university is these stations aren't properly monitored. Proper moderation costs money. A lot of them aren't willing to spend the money.

How about using some of that $1 million to hire somebody at ideastream to manage their feedback forums and emails? Seriously, I have sent them 5 emails already telling them that WVIZ has been broadcasting a blank 35.5 sub ever since 25.3 was deactivated, and that is being mixed in with WOCV-CD's slate of subchannels. This has been going on since the last full week of September, and so far every one of my messages appear to have fallen on deaf ears. Already sent them another email earlier today.

You could call them, or go there in person. Or have some patience rather than send email after email for a week.

Terms of the grant specified new studios for JazzNEO WCSB. Can't be allocated for anything else.

A $1 million studio. This is what public radio stations dream of.

“Their belief in our work and their investment in the future of this American art form will allow us to host live performances, feature both local and international talent, and collaborate more deeply with other jazz-focused organizations.”

I rarely call, but it's getting to the point that I just might, but what are the chances that they will ignore my voicemail as well?

Really, engineering should be monitoring issues like this on a daily, if not, every other day basis. No one can't monitor or figure out why there's a blank channel with no virtual number being transmitted? I'm sure they have high end industry grade tools that would easily show this, but then they'll probably point the blame at me and say that it's occurring on my end and that no one else has reported this problem. Here's proof from an average Samsung TV...

And for the record, I've already re-scanned, which didn't remove the blank 35.5 sub.

Sorry for going off topic. And now back to your regularly scheduled conversation...

If you constantly call and leave voicemails for them over and over, then they’ll probably ignore them. Just call one time.
Or learn how to remove the channel from the lineup manually, then it won’t bother you.

Did you say "Please?" Lecturing rarely works.

No need to remove it since WVIZ can put the new WCSB jazz channel there for our listening pleasure after we get tired of Antiques Roadshow and other assorted cooking shows.
