TiVo Stops Making Hardware / Selling Hardware

As a seller of DVRs, yes.

But if you read the entire thing (I read about it in this morning's Los Angeles Times) they are moving toward being a provider of smart TV software. There may well be a TiVo-branded smart TV line at some point.

They are also going to continue support for the existing DVRs, which is also unsurprising since they still need the program guide infrastructure going forward.

And they will still be called TiVo. Your topic header is therefore simplistic and misleading.

I agree, bad topic description. My cable company switched to Tivo streaming devices, so those are hooked up to my TVs now. They are all small like the Tivo minis are. They all use Cloud DVR, so setting up recordings and watching on any of the devices is similar to the DVR system was.
There are two real nice features with this setup that the DVR didn't provide:

1)I can change to any channel and immediately rewind up to a half hour. With the actual Tivo that was only on a channel the box had active on one of its streams.
2)Some channels have shows in the past available to watch on demand. You can go backwards in your guide and if the show is available it will show have a green icon, you can then watch it. Seems to be just certain networks and kinds of shows, but it is a nice feature.

That sounds like a great setup, and if I were still a cable subscriber I would have welcomed that.

I wonder how the newly refocused TiVo will support that. I presume from their announcement that they are no longer manufacturing any equipment, so where would the cable company go for replacement boxes?

I probably described that wrong. They actually aren't Tivo branded devices, They are Evolution devices. Tivo is just the software running them.

I posted this topic three days ago with a more accurate subject title. It would be nice to keep the discussion there so we don't end up with duplicate threads with repetitive comments.

Thanks for posting that. Given that both this thread and yours are in National TV, I wonder why the OP didn't notice yours.

I edited the "TiVo is no more" to its current heading.

Thanks, mi amigo, but it's still not totally accurate. Hiltzik reported that they stopped manufacturing several months ago and are now discontinuing sales of whatever inventory they still have. (It may be that they have some limited quantity left for exchanges under warranty; I can't tell from either the article or their website.)

They do have limited inventory. I called about buying a backup one, but they said they are only for replacements of subscribed units. Keyword: $ubscribed.
