I feel like I have been so lucky. I entered radio the same year the FCC mandated an end to AM/FM simulcasting. There was suddenly a need for more on-air people. It was a great time to get experience. AM was still king and if you were good enough on the FM station you might get a chance to be promoted to the AM. On the technical side there were huge developments as tubes were being phased out in favor of solid-state. Audio processing was graduating from the Gates Level Devil to the CBS Max twins to Orban's Optimod. Automation was advancing from stepping relays to mini-computers. Radio was fun!
There was a lot of creativity in engineering, on-air, promotions. Now it seems the only creativity is by the accountants. Now that I am at the end (actually past the end) of my career in broadcasting, I feel sorry people who are still hoping to make a living in the biz.
