Future of WROQ mornings

JB&B will cease at the end of the year. What does this mean for WROQ mornings? WROQ I believe was a charter affiliate (or close to) for The Big Show, and has done quite well for them for a long time (not sure about recently).

I’m guessing it’ll be something piped in, but it’ll be interesting to see how this affects WROQ.

End of an era with the end of John Boy and Billy and The Big Show. They originated at 107.9 in Charlotte during the Jefferson-Pilot years, eventually moving to 99.7-WRFX and regional syndication. With WROQ one of the longtime affiliates.

Several major Charlotte based shows have ended or changed in recent years, including John Boy and Billy, Ace and TJ, Bob and Sheri, Matt and Ramona. Maney and LauRen of Kiss 95.1 is now enjoying syndication in Augusta and Memphis, but I don't think they would be the right fit for WROQ.

So will WROQ go local or have somebody else piped in?

And speaking of Kiss 95.1, they were the original WROQ back when they were a rock station in the 80s, known as 95Q. Then they moved more toward CHR and eventually became WNKS, the long running Kiss 95.1 hit music station. Giving the WROQ call letters to Rock 101.1.

Not to be too picky, but WROQ didn't remain CHR in the transition to Kiss. It had that disastrous run as oldies WGKL in either '90 or '91 before going back to CHR roughly a year later as WAQQ. It was also WEDJ "The Edge," though I've heard conflicting opinions as to whether it actually went modern rock/alternative.

Yes there were a few format variations until the permanent change to Kiss 95.1. But the point being when 95.1 dropped the WROQ call letters they were subsequently adopted by Rock 101.1 in the neighboring GSP market.

In the Summer fall of 95 WEDJ 95.1 The Edge did lean modern hits, but not full blown alternative. By the time the slow transition back to CHR started. By the spring of 96 The Edge went full circle back as CHR before the eventual flip to Kiss on May 31st of 96.

There was also a Rock 40 format in the late 80s.

The letters first went to the AM which was Z-Rock for a while.

They will never ever EVER have a local morning show.

Did I say NEVER?
It worked well for them for the past 35 years to pipe it in, so my guess would be the next one would come from another Audacy classic rocker. They share a lot of talent with Bayou 95.7 in New Orleans.

Audacy shares a lot of talent among its classic rockers. It doesn't, however, seem to have national talent for that format. Maybe that's not surprising given how some of its previous national talent efforts went.

Please I hope they hire Craig Debolt and Action Jackson!
