Harley Drew WBBQ, WGAC Augusta GA

An early mentor of mine, and many in radio, Harley Drew has passed away. Harley was the PD of WBBQ/Augusta GA during it's rise as a Top 40 legend in the 60's and early 70's. I used to hang around the station almost every day after school. He and the late Bob Bolton taught me the basics of being an on-air talent. Harley was responsible for my first commercial radio job at the old WFNL/Augusta (now WKZK). Years later when I was let go suddenly at Q's competitor WAUG (terrible GM, great PD) Harley was gracious enough to let me use WBBQ's production studios to put together my aircheck and make dubs to mail out (this was WAY before email and digital). A few years after that I got to work with Harley when he was OM at Sunny 105 in Augusta. Harley was always a gentleman and always gracious with his time. A true legend has gone.

Many of us who were involved in Top 40 radio in the 60's and 70's knew Harley as a very important figure. He had a huge station in a smaller market and was recognized for a wide range of programming skills from talent coaching to great contests and superb playlist management.

Harley was "Hooper rated #1" in my book!

I spent several years in Augusta. Harley was the soul of the station. His traffic and news reports from his car proved so "firsthand". 450.800 MHz (right freq?) was my go-to channel to hear all the happenings in the CSRA. WBBQ knew people were listening to the UHF channel as the HS team names often were said "in code".

Austin Rhodes on WGAC keeps Harley's "CSRA-centric" spirit alive today...Please give him a listen.

"Handsome" Harley Drew will be missed.

Harley Drew was never a mobile news reporter.
