John Dickerson to Exit CBS News

John Dickerson will leave CBS at the end of the year according to this article.

John Dickerson will leave CBS News at the end of the year, a move that will inevitably raise questions about the future direction of “CBS Evening News,” which he has been co-anchoring with Maurice DuBois as part of a format revamp since earlier this year.

“I am extremely grateful for all that CBS gave me — the work, the audience’s attention and the honor of being part of the network’s history — and I am grateful for my dear colleagues who’ve made me a better journalist and a better human,” the anchor said in a social-media post on Monday. “I will miss you.”

No surprise. It was a huge mistake for him to take the job anchoring the Evening News. John is a great journalist, but he's not an anchor. The arrival of Bari Weiss signals the start of change at CBS. Dickerson is one of the first casualties.

Dickerson was, however, quite good as host of Face The Nation for a little under three years after Bob Schieffer retired in 2015. IIRC, Dickerson also hosted the show for a few months in 2021 when Margaret Brennan took maternity leave.

In that context, saying he's not an anchor makes perfect sense. His strength is in reporting politics, not introducing field reports. It is a shame that there isn't a place for him at CBS News in that capacity, although "political correspondent" is an endangered species these days. (Maybe PBS will snap him up for News Hour.)

I predict that the CBS Evening News will become even less relevant under Weiss. She knows pitifully little about broadcast journalism, and her political leanings have been all over the place in her career.

The CBS Evening News has been a hot mess since Uncle Walter retired. That's unfortunate, especially since the CBS News app is so good, both on the O&O local newscasts and the national feed.

I remember when he anchored CBS This Morning. I felt he was not suited for the role and the morning show.

Here’s the article to which I linked when I kicked off this thread in a post that subsequently sent itself to the cornfield (probably due to the flaky Wi-FI connection that I was using this morning):

I think a couple of things are true at once: he doesn’t come off well in the anchor position, and there are some ideological factors at play. He likely would have been vulnerable even if he was well suited for the anchor role.

i have the feeling this is the start of a mass exodus of reporters who want to lean left or be more "Fair and Balance" and don't want to play ball with the Trump Regime's propaganda based news.

The curse of Roger Mudd lol. I will say it’s one of the strangest things. 60 Minutes has always been a highly respected and high-rated news program for decades as is Sunday Morning, and CBSN was a hit yet CBS Evening News has been in the gutter forever now.

Couric and O’Donnell were the best anchors outside of Scheffier’s interim role but also didn’t fit in with the CBS feel. Pelley should have thrived but failed to do so as he had the personality of a piece of white bread and then was fired for a myriad of reasons depending on which side you take. Glor was too forgettable and meek.

Back in the day 20 years ago I did think regular weekend anchor John Roberts when he was with CBS should have gotten the gig. In fact he quit after getting passed over. But given his later disastrous run with CNN with the Kyra Phillips scandal (who he’s now married to lol) and of course his Fox News run perhaps CBS dodged the bullet on that one.

Had Rathergate not happened Russ Mitchell would assuredly have been Rather's successor. That he was passed over twice in favor of Couric and Pelley played a major role in him leaving the network to become WKYC's main anchor. They literally let him walk away for a job anchoring in a top-25 market.

Would the ratings have been any better? Probably not, but they wouldn't be spinning their wheels devoid of any direction or identity like they are now.

Interesting I don’t remember Mitchell getting any attention when Rather I mainly recall it was all about John Roberts getting passed over.

And honestly Mitchell, along with his one time former co-host Dawn Stensland went back to where they belonged best which was on local news.

Since WKYC is owned by Tegna, I can't help but imagine that Mitchell would be thinking about what he would do in the event of a Nexstar takeover.

I didn't know him; he was a couple of classes after me at Mizzou.

It already happened with the Pentagon Press pool. The “Mainstream Media” left the Press pool in the Pentagon but the ones that took their spots are those more known for appearing in Trump rallies than being in the traditional press.

The Pentagon press corps has a new look.
Out are all the major networks, The Washington Post and The Associated Press.

In are TurningPoint USA, RedState and a streaming service run by MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell.

More than 60 journalists “representing a broad spectrum of new media outlets and independent journalists” have received credentials to cover the headquarters of the U.S. military under new Trump administration restrictions, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said Wednesday.
They will join 26 journalists who agreed to the new restrictions even as the networks, including administration-friendly Fox News, refused to sign on to the rules along with the Post, AP and other traditional outlets.
