The 'We ❤️ Public Television' telethon

This is a first for PBS, instead of the local affiliate pledge week, PBS itself is doing an 8 hour long telethon on Thanksgiving, with an impressive list of celebrities and music artists. PBS SoCal will also be doing their own telethon on a different date. Are other PBS affiliates planning their own separate telethon?

I don't know if it's a first. PBS created a lot of programming that stations used for pledge weeks. A lot of those oldies concerts and other boomer music shows originated either from PBS or national programmers.

But wasn't that done around a specific program during a pledge week. This appears to be an 8 hour long telethon with appearances and performances, and show tributes. Done in the traditional telethon format.

I even watched it on KPBS when it kicked off during its 2-Week Winter Membership Campaign on Thursday November 27th, it was SO SUCCESSFUL!!

I always thought it was the affiliate of PBS that organized the pledge programming.

Like in KQED-TV’s case I always seen their pledge programming on weekends. The programming sometimes came from Rick Steves from American Public Television. Yes when I see them it’s after the weekend edition of PBS News Weekend prior to the weekend edition spot taken by Horizons from PBS News, hosted by William Brangham and focusing on science, health and technology. And Compass Points from PBS News, hosted by Nick Schifrin with a focus on foreign affairs. Had no idea it was PBS itself that organize the pledge programming.

I always seen their pledge programming when local hosts say “donate to PBS today” and “donate to KQED today” interchangeably. Yes on some weekends movies and oldies concerts air on KQED-TV as pledge programming.

If PBS is doing the pledge programming isn’t the host of the pledge shows coming from local affiliates like WGBH-TV and WETA-TV the most notable PBS affiliates that produce PBS Newshour and some of the Primetime shows for PBS.
