Sacramento 6+ October Shares

I wonder how KYRV fares 25-54. I'm thinking the classic rock fans are a little annoyed at the pop being added to an AOR playlist with inconsistent presentation. AOR type morning and night shows, with pop sounding female jocks during the day. I'm going back to my original assessment of the station sounding like someone added flowers, plushy pillows and nice curtains to a man cave. Perhaps they should look at committing to Classic Hits.

The Classic Rock listeners tune out when they hear 4 Non Blondes and the Classic Hit lifegroup and other regular cumers have no idea the station has shifted due to its inconsistency.

I don't really buy that Sacramento cannot support classic hits when it's in most markets including many in the midwest. Sacramento had a long pop CHR history in the 70s 80s and 90s. Just look at the battle between KSFM, KWOD, KROY-FM and KPOP earlier. KROY-AM, KNDE and KFRC (who had a decent share ) in the 70's.

Of course this is 2025 and the Sacramento Market is nearly twice as big as it was in the late 80s and way more diverse.

Most of the classic hits in the market are covered when you lump KYMX and KBEB, along with KYRV and KSEG. Unfortunately, they're sandwiched between AC records on the first two and AOR sounding songs on the last two. As a consequence,I believe KBEB, KYMX and KSEG numbers are inflated due to the lack of a stronger Classic Hits station.

It reminds me of the period in the mid to late 90's when "Modern AC" KZZO had huge numbers before Sacramento launched mainstream CHR, KDND in 1998. After that, KZZO's numbers retreated.

Yeah, I gave them a listen yesterday. It's not focused, and not in a fun JACK-FM "we play what we want" way. Which, oddly, is what it was before it was The River.

JACK wasn't setting the world on fire, but iHeart wanted a spoiler---something that would draw from both the Eagle and Rock 98, and Curtiss Johnson, who'd programmed both of those stations, by that point, was our Sr. VP of Programming (and is still a good friend of mine). I thought Curtiss did a great job of finding that fairly tight space.

SO much has changed here (and in the Bay Area for that matter). The only real constant that I see from the 70s to now is that Country, Rock, Adult Contemporary and Talk usually do really well (allowing for the usual cycles and wobbles).

Owners are very willing to just blow up a station and start over if the ratings aren't stellar. 93.7 has had nine sets of call letters since 1980.

The stations that held to a concept (KFBK, The Eagle, Mix, KSTE, 98Rock, KNCI) have been rewarded. But again---that's a pretty narrow set of formats---two talk stations, two rock stations, an AC and a country.

KYRV is currently in an identity crisis. They want to be classic rock with some classic hits sprinkled in but it’s often a train wreck. The move was likely to target KSEG, which also leans soft for a classic rock station (and continually surprises me how they pull such high 6+ numbers). But you won’t hear 4 Non Blondes on The Eagle.

Since KCCL has been gone for some time, KYRV needs to fully commit as a classic hits station. They can even keep “The River” positioning as it works with the format. The music and imaging however needs a total overhaul.
