BEN FM playlist

Has BEN become more repetitive? I always thought they had a larger library than most, but looking at what they've been playing lately (only going back to around 8:00 last night), a lot of songs have been played more than once. That's just a 16-hour window. And it's not like they're amazingly popular songs, compared to most of the songs that have been played once in that timeframe.

Even looking at the 10 songs they just played, seven have been played elsewhere since around 8pm. Is that normal for them?

Yes, they have been tight like that for at least a few years. Not quite Audacy-Classic-Hits-30-times-a-week rotations, however 2-plays-a-day/18-20ish-a-week, sure. I've seen that in Mediabase reports over time (but I'm not looking at one from right now, so YMMV)

You can bet that those songs are chosen by music testing, so they are 'amazingly popular' at least with the sample recruited for the music test.

Neither station uses a simple rotation where all songs are played equally. They each have a small group of songs that get played more often. "Take On Me" gets played 12 times a week at WBEN, while Love Is a Battlefield gets played 20 times a week at WOGL. Then there's a group of songs that gets played 9 times a week, and then a larger group that gets played between 1-2 times a week. Then those songs get shuffled around for the next week. The spins are scattered in different dayparts so they don't appear at the same time every day. This is pretty common for all stations.

Not sure if true or not, but doesn't the recording artist get royalty every time their song gets played?
