Sherman/Denison Texas Pirate

Oh, wow! Wasn't KDSX the original call for the long-dead 950 that tried to set up camp in Kaufman, after abandoning Denison, and led to its death and the death of Belton's AM?

1670 too, huh? I wonder who suckered this group into such an ill-advised venture. It's a shame, too. Sherman/Denison really could use a decent local voice, but this sure ain't the way to go about achieving that goal.

The “KDSX” Facebook page also claims they will soon be on 13560 kHz shortwave, so three pirate operations.

Problem with 13560: It is a common ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) frequency used for all sorts of things, including RF chips in credit cards. At my QTH I hear a jumble of tones and pulses on the frequency.

Why don't they just stick to streaming? Do they think nobody's going to report them? Jake (one of the guys on the personalities page) has actually been involved with a licensed radio station before, since he's pictured on mic in front of a U92 banner, which is West Virginia University's college station, so he should probably know better.

What kind of power does it sound like it's cranking out? Steve Eberhart's KGAF translator operates on the co-channel, just down the road in Gainesville, so he'd be the first in line to seek remedy from this outlaw LP operation.

I work for Steve. I emailed him and I wonder if he heard it earlier in the week. They do ID a bunch and talk about the website and Facebook. I think they think using call letters and doing 'legal IDs' such as KDSX L-P-F-M Sherman will fool everyone.

There is no Facebook post there.
It’s there now. I’m not sure what forum rules are for copying and pasting Facebook posts (do they come under copyright or Fair Use provisions?) but to summarize: The “KDSX” operator explains that they are running a number of Part 15 transmitters on FM and AM, and says they are all legal. The operator also claims that someone else is broadcasting a feed of their internet stream on another transmitter on the same frequency at a power level far exceeding Part 15 limits, and that is what might be interfering with the KGAF translator.

I have heard of running networks of Part 15 transmitters to cover a target area, so this may be an example, if the FB post is truthful.

As a cowboy, and a certified East Texas redneck, I have several years of experience in dealing with, amongst other things, the waste byproduct of Angus, Brahmans, Herefords, and Shorthorns. Pretty much any type of four-legged critter, for that matter, but bulls and cows are what I have the most.

This, 🐸, is Grade A stuff we're looking at right here.

But one is allowed to run about 2 mW into a dipole on 13560 +/- 7 kHz. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it's far better than 100 mW input (50-75 mW output) into a 3 meter antenna (only a few microwatts actually radiated, at best) on Ancient Modulation, or 11 nanowatts ERP on FM.

Yes, it's an ISM band, but there is plenty of Part 15 operation there. Plus, the sunspots are still at their peak, or maybe beginning their downward slide. Even a 2 milliwatt signal will get out under the right conditions, especially during the day.
