Is Classic Rock 101.1 going away?

Stoneman posted this on his Facebook page:

This is Stoneman. After 22 years, I’ve made the decision to move on—and I want you with me. I’m taking everything that matters most: the music, the memories, the community we’ve built at @clall And I’m bringing it all to 93.3 The Planet this Friday at 3.
Classic Rock 101.1 is going away, but the ride isn’t over. You’ve supported me through every twist and turn… 93.3 The Planet Rocks Jay Stoneman Stone

People commenting took this to mean that WROQ will soon be no more. It would make sense. Audacy wants to keep him around, so they move him to 93.3. But 101.1 gets pretty darn good ratings. And they truly are the only game in town.

Thoughts?

From 101.1's Chris Lee via Facebook:

Today is my last day on air for Classic Rock 101.1. I found out this afternoon like most of you did that Classic Rock 101.1 is going away.

Also found out today that I was awarded 2025's Best Radio Personality by the readers of The Post and Courier Greenville. This is incredible and something I did not expect.

With that being said....

I'll finish out the week doing the morning news on 101 and the Business News on 98.9 WORD. Then, this chapter of my 40 year radio career is over.

Thanks to everyone who listened over the past 11 years, I am beyond grateful! Thanks to Audacy, Inc. and everyone at Audacy in Greenville. Jay Stoneman Stone, is moving to 93.3 The Planet Rocks, rock on brother! It's been a wild ride!

People have been messaging me asking what I'm going to do...lol. First, radio has only been a part time job for me for the last 11 years.

I have a fantastic full time job as a web developer here in Greenville. For now, I'm going to take a much needed break during my new "free time". I'll continue my duties as a board member of The South Carolina Entertainment & Music Hall of Fame and helping promote Dixiana!

One door closes and God opens another....looking forward to the next chapter.

if this is not a stunt i would bet that it will be something safe to compete with 102.5 an agressive move would be to put the block on that frequency to compete with 107.3

Wonder if The Block gets a boost or maybe something along the lines like The Spot doing classic hits. As we saw with the tease with Drex and Barbie over at B Audicy did a good job getting people talking, and speculating. From what Lance has posted though it sounds like an all out format change will be taking place.

This appears basically the combining of both Audacy rock formats into just one in the market. I initially thought they would be bringing magic back but those that mentioned an upgrade for the block is also a strong possibility . Since jamz is urban ac there would be a nice opportunity for the block to get its younger format on a similar signal to 107.3

Lance has reported on this:

The weird thing to me is that WROQ has ALWAYS outranked The Planet. Why not “combine” the stations on 101.1?

I suspect 102.5 will pivot further toward classic rock, or 104.9 will pick up classic rock if this is indeed not a stunt.

My predictions for 101.1 are - The Block gets an upgrade, The Fan moves to 101.1 (WROQ has The Panthers, and for what it’s worth, not much but Fan DOES have the Paladins, and sports on FM with a local emphasis has done well for Audacy) or they go with an AC format, in that order.

IF 101.1 flipped, and to AC, it would be 6 days before Christmas. I could see them framing it as “Magic came back just in time for Christmas” or some kind of revival of that brand in that context. It’s been parked on WFBC-HD4 for a reason.

My Thoughts Exactly, It's been very unlike them to NOT have Christmas Music on one of their Full Power Stations. Not Counting the Anderson & Clemson Translators, of course.

It could be ALL Christmas - but stunting with it for just a few days - but a horrible tease about the return of Magic. Then a totally different format after Christmas.

I'd love to hear more speculation. Let's pretend The Block gets the upgrade to 101.1. What would you do with the translators?
Let's say you upgrade the fan to 96.3. it's a better signal. Then what do you do with 97.1/.7?
So many moving parts.

(My guess is Magic comes back. They kept it around for a reason and with John Boy and Billy leaving, now was the perfect time for a flip. --although pre Christmas for that Christmas format bump would have been better)

I’ve been listening to 101.1 and this sounds pretty much like a real thing. They’re saying a lot about the move to 93.3 at 3pm Friday and it’s being promoted on 93.3 as well. No mention of 101.1’s future other than it’s going away. Sounds like something more than a stunt is going on.

Agreed that a Magic return stunt would be terrible.
