WJZF-LP, 91.5 Knoxville on air

That’s great. I didn’t know about this. I used to listen occasionally to Brian Clay’s show on WJBE. I’ll have to check it out if I can.

The bad news is that I see it only transmits 6 watts, and the signal pattern does not reach me, even a little.

I hadn’t heard of this till I saw the story a few days ago as well. I figured maybe it’d have coverage similar to some of the translators around town, but this signal basically reaches nowhere. It’s not just staticky, but completely unlistenable anywhere west of the 640 intersection. Kind of a shame because it is interesting. I worked at 99.1/99.3 in the 90’s during their simulcast & smooth jazz format as “Double 99, The Smooth Edge”, & I’ve always enjoyed the smooth jazz format ever since. That’s one thing I often find frustrating that there is basically no longer any kind of relaxing or downtempo format of any kind anymore on FM when you want to chill out. Classical probably being the sole exception, & it’s also fading away as well in many markets.

I have a suspicion that some of the translators are over powered. I’m far west of the 93.7 WVLZ translator, yet it booms in here, usually causing bleed over onto WKZX. Am I to believe that 9 watts is allowing that to occur?

I have felt the same way for years. Sometimes I just want to de-stress and put on something relaxing, but the only choice on FM these days is classical on WUOT. Thankfully SiriusXM has some good options.

WKZX is only 75 feet off the ground on the tower on sharps ridge. Where WVLZ is 541feet up the tower on sharps ridge. Height makes a hell of a difference...

WKZX isn’t on Sharp’s Ridge. But I assume you know that and it was just a typo.

I’ve been listening to WJZF over the last couple days on my commute between Maryville and Knoxville. It’s very enjoyable, but the signal is very spotty. In some areas it drops out completely. If the signal was better, it would probably be my first choice.

Yep I meant WJZF.

I have a mobile app for iPhone and android -- the opportunity to listen pretty much anywhere. Search for WJZF or Jazzspirations in your App Store. Thanks in advance!
