Palm Springs KGAY/KMEE Frequency swap?

KGAY is now officially at 103.1 FM...with an on air announcement that beginning New Year's Eve, something 'bright and shiny' is coming to 106.5 FM.

MeTVmusic is now history. My tab for KMEE no longer works, and website appears to be gone.
 
There's no word on the status of KMEE host Patrick Evans who did 10-3 pm weekdays. I assume he's gone also. Evans is a Former Palm Springs TV meteorologist who also previously did a weekday show on KWXY.

Patrick continues to be with the News Press & Gazette group of stations as head of the weather department.

They certainly need to update his bio, that Studio 100.9 has been off the air for at least 3 years or more.

Yes, the state of TV and radio here is dismal. Very low per-station billings. The TV's get over half their income from "must carry" on cable.

What saves TV is that the majority of HOAs here negotiate flat cable service for all residents. And essentially all the gated communities are HOA run, accounting for a huge percentage of the population locked into cable. There are over 125 golf courses, with the majority in HOA administered developments. And there are several hundred other HOAs in developments with no golf course, and nearly all have master cable agreements.

Do most HOA's not allow rooftop antennas for TV? I wonder if that's the reason for cable in the master agreement.

It's off topic, but are you getting a lot of flooding from these storms? I know the CV is known for flash flooding.

End of an Audacy non-compete clause for the 103.1 signal, which was previously home for their competing “Channel Q” format?

KMEE was the highest profile affiliate of MeTV Music. Does that mean Weigel has stopped syndicating it outside of Chicago and Milwaukee?

The HOA might put it in their master agreement to ban antennae, but having an external antenna or small dish for TV/radio is 100% unenforceable by the association. FCC has ruled those are permitted so long as it’s on your own property (not permanently affixed to a communal wall). There was an exception if the community has a way to provide free OTA reception via community antenna, but that’s become exceedingly uncommon.

I’m not in Palm Springs, but I do live in a condo complex with a HOA-thingy a couple hours away. Our complex (and all the ones I’m aware of here in Laughlin/Bullhead) does not negotiate for cable/internet for the whole complex in these digital days. We only have one cable provider in the area anyway. The complex I’m in (built in the 1980’s) had communal analog cable…I don’t know if it was for cable or a community antenna, but the infrastructure is mostly still there.

RV parks, as a general rule around here do offer limited (under 30 channels) analog cable as part of their Weekly/monthly lot fees. And a good chunk of RVs come with a built-in TV antenna.

its not in the bio if youd click to read it... no idea whhy its showing up. i didnt see studio 100.9 when i read the actual bio

They must allow antennas, but they can impose very difficult rules to keep them less visible.

I am in a large HOA in an area with well over 3,300 homes in it and very well developed rules. There are a few satellite dishes I have seen "bits of" from the street or walkways, but it appears most people either use the HOA cable or supplement with streaming services. I have 2g FiOS, so don't need cable or an antenna.

Sidebar: it's funny, but my daughter in Quito has a faster fiber connection than I do and she pays half as much. Much of Latin America is a generation ahead of the US because they skipped at least one "generation" and when lots more content in Spanish became available, they all made it economical for the ISPs to put in the best gear.

Where I am is on an incline, and we have, at worse, had an inch of water backed up in our interior patio. Our house is about 18" above the street, and the gold course behind us has landscaping that is as much as 20 feet below our back yard... tough for golfers, but in the worst rains we have ever seen in 25 years that area has never had more than foot or two of water in it; obviously well designed when building began about 35 years ago.

In fact, the whole valley slopes gradually from about 500 feet above sea level down to about 240 feet below sea level at the Salton Sea. Places that flood do so mostly because of poor designs on elevations in specific developments.

It is a very well done station. The "press" tends to say it is "disco" or "dance" music but it is sort of like a rhythmic Jack, covering several decades and not Musique's "In the Bush" and forgotten club songs. What KGAY does very well is talking about the community, its events and activities and organizations... which they actively promote and have a presence at, too.

I have to make a resolution for 2026 to call the manager and see if I can invite him to lunch and tour the station!

The Coachella Valley has been estimated to have somewhere around 75,000 members of its LGBTQ+ community, meaning about 15% or a bit more of the market is gay, so it is logical that a station serving that market would be a major player.
 
KGAY is in its annual More Music Week mode right now, so both air-staff are off for the holidays. John Taylor does a very local-oriented morning show 6-10A (think interviews with visiting celebs and local event promotion in "The Gayborhood"). Chris Shebel handles afternoons 3-7P, and cites more national news impacting LGBTQ+. They will probably be back on air as of Monday Jan 5.

There is also a daily one hour retro mix show at 12Noon and replayed on Sundays from 11A-4P. Then a 2-hour current mix show from djModGirl.

They have iHeart and tuneIn streams in addition to KGAYPalmSprings.com

I stream daily from my exile in the hinterlands of Northern CA.
 
Reading between the lines, the MeTVmusic audience was too old, and this new AC will be a better match and a reach a similar (and younger) demographic like KGAY.

What happens now to KMEE 92.1?

I note with interest that KGAY-FM's former full power frequency (92.1 mHz), is not mentioned in this piece. I would think, however, that unless something else is planned for it, that the new "Sunny" might fit there very well.

As an aside, to let you know how old I feel I'm getting, I would have never considered Green Day back in the day to be an AC artist. (I can't imagine an AC station playing, for example, "Long View.".) My, how times have changed!

The new logo only has 106.5. Also, 92.1 was leased by Brad Fuhr, and not owned. I'm certain that 92.1 will not be a part of Sunny.

Also, there has been a big format hole in the Coachella Valley for AC and Soft AC for a long time. I was wondering when that would finally change.
