WWMO, Reidsville

From sometime in 1965, until the end of March, 1987, WWMO was the Gospel paint burner of the NC Piedmont. I say the end of March, although their last official broadcast was on Sunday night, March 29, but someone was there for a couple days afterwords, IDing the station at the tops of the hours, as needed. That callsign was heard on two other area frequencies afterwords (maybe for another thread) and they were imitated during and after that time by several area/regional stations, but it all started at 102.1 FM in Reidsville. Here's a classic clip, where you'll hear such well-known DJs as Preacher Bud Thomas and Bill Shreave (sp).

Anybody know who does the Schules spot?

Here's a good synopsis of the station, thanks to Dave Compton. He put together a Reidsville Radio CD for educational use (local library, etc) and also sent me this cut, because the downloaded MP3 I had originally gotten from the old MidCarolinaRadio site, got lost during flash drive recovery. Anyway, enough of my rambling, enjoy.

If anybody has anything personal to share, please do so, thanks for reading and reacting LOL.

I only remember passing the studios. We probably listened to WREV. actually, I know Earl Burton did the weather there and at one time on WFRC and I have a recording of one of his really long Saturday programs if someone can explain how I can get it from cassette to online.

My Sunday School teacher after I graduated college traveled for work and listened to it. We came back to his church for some event and I had to tell him it was now playing rap.

Roger on that, thanks for the reply/info. I never got to see the studios, but I had several friends/mentors who worked there over the years. 'REV was in the same building, BTW and 'MO in fact, was the old WREV FM, before Bill Oliver, Jr. changed the call sign to his initials and the format to Gospel. If you listen to Dave's synopsis, Mr. Oliver is the one introducing Jesus Use Me by The Harvesters Quartet, from the stations very early days and an old automation reel thereof. Yeah, it went from 'MO/Gospel, to 'BIG/Whatever/Country, to 'JMH/Rap, plumb sickening. In what format is your recording, cassette, reel-to-reel, etc?

Cassette. I copied it and mailed the copied tape to someone who posted here. Never heard back so I don't know if anything was done. Certainly this person never posted a link.

There was a tower beside the studio, too. Shaped kind of like the Washington Monument.

Gotcha, man I'd like to hear it someday. Re: cassettes, these days, due to spacial limitations, I set up my handy dandy new-meets-old-tech boombox and my trusty rusty ol' digital recorder, running a patch cord between them and adjusting the levels before recording, much like I used to do, when I recorded carts, back when I worked in radio. I record the tape or what I want to record from it, then take the MP3 over here to the PC, put it in SoundForge and go from there. Here's a short example of such.

Earl Burton did those long forecasts for years on 'REV, W14AU (I believe that was the TV station's call sign) and 'MO, when it was on 830, maybe others, every day but Sunday, I believe. I've also heard an air check of a DJ filling in for him, as in doing an air shift, so until I heard that, I didn't know he actually spun the hits LOL. By the time I heard him, all his broadcasts, save for the TV ones, were done from his home via phone. I remember his noon forecasts on 'REV were sponsored by Shortsugars Barbecue, which recently closed, BTW. Dave has a clip from one of those on the 'REV cut, may post that in another thread, the cut, that is. BTW, two 'MO alumni are heard on the above file. Ray Jones is doing the ID and Dave Compton is doing Brother Grubbs' Intro. The tower of which you spoke, was/is probably 'REV's.

I used a second cassette recorder but I don't know if I can make that work again. I had a Radio Shack recorder but it doesn't work any more.

I don't know about how often he did it, but he was on WFRC at one point.

Roger on unsureness (no, that's not a word) of the old equipment. As my first GM in radio said multiple times, if it's a machine, it's gonna break. Didn't know Earl was ever on 'fRC. Should-a-known, as previously stated, he was on almost everywhere else in Reidsville so why not there LOL.

Re: Earl Burton on 'FRC, I asked Dave Compton about that, when we talked on Friday and he told me the first time he saw Earl, was at 'FRC, while riding in a friend's car in 1969, who in fact, was the late Dave Gilbert, who was Dave's neighbor. Dave Gilbert's passing is referenced in another thread. I said all that to say this. Yeah, he verified that Earl was on 'FRC, too. Dunno how early Earl started is career, but reckon it's safe to say he was on the old 'REV FM, but was he ever on 'MO on FM? Reckon that's another question for Dave LOL. P.S. I have, somewhere, some audio on tape of him on 'MO when it was on AM 830 licensed to Eden, but that's for another time/thread, especially since I don't know where it is at the moment or even if it's playable LOL.

Gotcha. I thought Earl was from the area originally, but from what I've seen online, he moved to the area for work, so my comment about him possibly being on the old 'REV FM or 'MO on FM wouldn't hold true, unless he was on there during the big Gospel hay days, as a Weather Man, as he was everywhere else in the area, well almost everywhere else.

Just got these from Dave Compton this morning, two scoped files from Wednesday night, February 7, 1973 and I'm gonna try and post them next.

I'm not sure I clicked on the right button to reply about WWMO.
But I worked there from 1988 to 1994.
The format was a mixture of music and teaching, primarily Southern Gospel.
The staff during that time was
David Lewis
Alan Bell
Von Heffinger
Me- John Wyrick
The station manager was Ron Smith
Owner- Chuck Stone
